Watch a YouTube video, completely disregard the usual “this is a ten minute repair” claim at the beginning, and profit

This is how small businesses fail. He tells you what the problem is, then you go behind his back and do it for less.

Soon the only stores will be Amazon and Walmart. Everyone else will be on welfare

Exactly.........my wife has repaired a dishwasher, washer and dryer. My thinking is appliances aren't made to be repair anymore. When it breaks put it at the road

That’s a rip off. Only costs the $8 to make it.

Napoleon would have told him where to get the part from online, how much it should cost AND how to change it.
Napoleon does good work, is honest, and well priced.

I agree with the OP. The industry is getting crazy. So many have $120 service calls now and 100% markup over retail on parts.
It's a good business to be in for profits.
I can't think of ANY washer latches I would charge over 180 installed for. It's usually one of the easiest jobs you can do. Even on stacked machines.

I asked him how much is the part. He quoted me 170.

I googled the part and its is 56 dollars and takes about 10 minutes to change.

Why should they only make money on the labor?

It might take ten minutes to change the part, but it takes more than ten minutes to leave one job drive to get the part, drive to your house and then drive home/next job. Probably two or three hours out of his day. Plus, the company that you called to do the work needs to make money on the job.

It's the price you pay when you don't have the time or knowhow to do the work yourself.

It’s not personal, it’s business. It’s called a mark-up which is French for “you can’t do it so now you pay me to do it”

Tell us they are ripoffs BEFORE you call the repair company. Next time something breaks at your house call no one . Handle it by yourself. You can't do it. You're a whiner.

Using Youtube vids and DIY forums I have been able to fix most anything needing a repair. But, occasionally I have to give up, but not often.

Same here.

Weve repaired the dishwasher, washer, microwave, oven, and refrigerator. And the obvious fixes to old sinks, faucets, garbage disposals, showers, ceiling fans, and toilets.

Spent about 3 hours (personal labor) and $80 replacing a motor that didnt fix the hot tub and had to call in the expert.

Spent about 5 hours (personal labor) and a few bucks doing a complete service on my generator and had to give up and send to a small repair shop.

Changing out motherboards and gaskets on appliances are pretty easy. I get in over my head on engine repair and the occasional motor.

Current projects are fixing the drivers side window on my sons car and some drywall repair in the garage.

There is a lot of value in service repairmen. But i like knowing how things work, and like knowing how to fix a problem that will probably resurface in my last 50 years of life.

Stanton's is a rip off like this. $75 to $125 to come diagnose something you already know thanks to the code and an internet search.

$75 to $125 dollars for someone with some level of knowledge and skills to drive to my house, and assess a problem seems very reasonable, I actually don’t see how a small business could be profitable doing it for less. If you already knew what the problem was why did you call them?

It’s all a matter of time, money and know-how.
If you don’t know how to fix it, it is going to cost you.
If you don’t have time to fix it, it is going to cost you.
If you don’t have money to fix it or don’t want to pay money for someone else to fix it, figure it out yourself.
I always try to figure it out myself first. But then, I am engineer.

That's a rip off. Each individual compound to form the part is like.. 50 cents.

I told them the code over the phone and they said what the internet said the code meant and they'd send someone out. I said cool, order whatever part we need and bring it out and let's get it done. They said sure.

Nope.

Dude just shows up says yep that's the problem. Says he needs to order a part and quotes ridiculous labor to install/replace.

Screw Stanton's Ace. I always support local businesses but they can go hang.

Note: this was a different problem than the door lock problem I fixed myself.

I want to pay someone with knowledge. I do not want to youtube or order parts online. I want someone to come fix it, I pay for it, and I move back to normal life.

Our washer would not spin, and YouTube correctly diagnosed it as the lid safety switch that ensures it won't spin unless the washer door is closed.

Ordered the part from Amazon for $11. Even learned how to hotwire it to run (unsafely) until the part arrived, and it was an easy install.

That was my greatest appliance repair triumph.
