My washer stopped working. I checked myself, but got the professionals to come.

Turns out the lid lock is faulty and needs to be changed. He quoted me 282 dollars to change it. I asked him how much is the part. He quoted me 170.

I googled the part and its is 56 dollars and takes about 10 minutes to change. I called his company and told him to cancel that shite.

That’s a rip off. Only costs the $8 to make it.

Duh.

Most appliance repairs can be done with a few tools, a smartphone with YouTube, a couple of beers, and a 30-45 minutes.

How much did you pay him to come out and diagnose?

Sounds like you paid for a service call for a man to tell you how to fix your shite.

People don't really fix things anymore, in general. Enough will pay that and not even make a 2nd call.

Companies have to turn profits to stay open. If you don't want to pay their salary and company overhead, do it yourself. It's pretty simple.

Stanton's is a rip off like this. $75 to $125 to come diagnose something you already know thanks to the code and an internet search. And then there's the quoted repair.

It's better to find a recommended guy off Nextdoor. They will tell you straight up whether to repair or buy a new one and won't rape you if you go for the repair.

And that shitty stupid lock mechanism I fixed with JB Weld and some beer.

So you tkink you can do it for 66 bucks but you called a professional and then complain about how much they want to charge you.

What you did not throw in was travel time and expenses. You know, truck note, gas, insurance and maintenence.

What you did not throw in was any profit unless you dont think professionals should make any profit.

Not all of them are a ripoff.

A few years ago I got a new freezer. Thing just stopped working one day. I lived an hours drive from nearest repair shop. Repair guy drove out, took one look at it. Said I'd be better off ordering the part online and plugging the new control panel in myself.

Total charge: $0 for 2 hours of his time (to/from my place) + his experience

I tried to give him $20 cash just for the gas if nothing else, he refused. He chuckled and said he'd get it on a later call, which has not happened yet (5-6 years).

I had a 3 year old front loader that crapped out and it was beyond my repair skills. I was quoted $600 for an $800 washer. I put it and the dryer out by road and went and bought some old school ones.

I’ve had the same A/C folks for years. My heater goes out. I know it’s the blower because I heard it rattling earlier.

Quotes me almost $2k to replace the blower and a few pieces of sheet metal that had surface rust. But really pushes hard for me to buy a new $9k dual unit. I’m like... are you serious?

His diagnosis confirmed what I already knew. So I ordered a used blower from eBay for $140. I replaced it myself. It took about 2 1/2 hours. There were even YouTube’s.

What an a-hole. Why up charge the shite out of me like that and lose my business forever?

OP: good job. Washers and driers are pretty easy to deal with
