Yes.

Eventually I moved back. Had to build my career elsewhere though.

I moved away in 1998. I lived in Oklahoma for a year and it was too far a drive to just go home for a weekend. During that time I missed it some. But I was a new college grad, newly wed, in a small town where I only knew two people other than my wife.

Then we moved to Houma for 6 months and I drove back to BR almost every weekend. There was always something going on and after a year away my wife and I took advantage of being close.

Then we moved to Houston and at first we drove back about once a quarter. Over time I came to hate that fricking drive so much. I loath it now.

In all that time, it wasn't BR I was missing, it was my family and friends. That is still the case. There's nothing about BR itself worth moving there for. It's the people I love that keep me coming back.

Now that I've been away longer than I lived there, and lived in other places and travelled the world some, there's no way in hell I'd move back unless I had no choice.

But I've missed out on a lot of time with my family and that part sucks. I never had the chance to randomly go visit my parents after work and sit and drink coffee and talk about my day. I regret that kind of thing.

But I had to forge my own life and opportunities are so much better outside of LA.

So no, I don't miss BR.

But I miss the people terribly.

Moved 2 years ago, don’t miss it at all and haven’t been back, moving a way you realize how needlessly hard everything is about living there.

Left almost three years ago after retiring. I miss a few good friends that I had and a great work environment.

Relatives who lived here moved away after parents passing

I miss the food, not much else. I saw a steady decline in the city in the 8 years I lived there.

i hate to ever agree with Paul Allen, but technically this is true with the opening of the 99 expansion from 59 to I10

I did 20 years in Chicago so had a bunch of good friends, but couldn't be happier about about where we're at. If I want to go visit for a Cubs game and some summer fun it's an easy flight. But I was so done with all the other shite. You will be too.

ETA: It's definitely slow going building out a new group of your people when you're in your 30s and 40s, but it's totally doable. Just immerse yourself in the local community...eat, drink, join groups, go to events, local games, and you'll meet people. I'm sure there's a local LSU group that meets for games, that'll be your best bet.

It really comes down to what you value most. I've lived all my life in BR but have traveled a lot. You always think, why can't BR be more like these other places? BR has a ton of problems and it doesn't look like they will be fixed any time soon. But I do get to stop by my parent's house and have coffee or a beer and talk about life whenever I feel like it. If I have a project at home, my dad always come by and helps me with it. I've completely renovated my house and my dad has helped me along the way. When I look at my home, these experiences add value that is priceless. My kids get to spend time with their cousins and grandparents. There are life long friends here who I get to see regularly and I value that. I have other family members who live out of state who don't have this and miss it. My brother has lived all over the world and rarely comes home. He does not value the things that I do. I can't move to another state and have land to hunt on with quick access to the gulf for fishing. This puts BR in a unique position for a lot of people. Again, some people value this, others do not.

The cost of living is so low in BR, if I want to GTFO, I just hop a plane and go enjoy the world for a week or two then come home. I then go to my parents house and tell them about our adventures and it's great. They will be gone one day and I won't be able to get that time back. I value this more than other aspects of life.

I'm moving in 17 months when my daughter graduates.

Baton Rouge was a great place to live for most of the time I lived here. Only recently has it gotten bad in my opinion. I'm sure there are things I will miss. I love LSU and tailgating etc...

I'm actually going to keep a house here and Air BNB it so we can still use it for football games and visiting.

So yes... there will be some things I miss.

BR obviously has a myriad of cultures but I was specifically referencing the culture south of I-10 from LSU to ascension parish and expanding from the lakes to capital heights over to bocage, goodwood, etc. It consists of several communities, centered around a good school / churches, restaurants, and parks.

Most of the people who live there know a lot of their neighbors because they either grew up in that area, have kids attend same schools, or have been there a long time. Basically way more people living in those areas are from Louisiana compared to the number of Texans living in Houston neighborhoods. That in itself lends to more relatable interests and commonalities to bond with. Additionally, there is probably only 1 degree of separation in terms of two people who don't know each other but they both know a friend who knows them. That actually keeps people in line because its hard to keep secrets in BR. In Houston, you can act like a JA in front of thousands of people and it would never get back to your circle.

Families are known. Who owns most of the McDonalds here in town? Who owns restaurant xyz? Who owns said construction company, or medical practice, or best place to get dental work, plastic surgery, etc. Hardly anyone knows who owns what in Texas because it is probably owned by a corporation and thousands of shareholders (except mattress mack).

In short, our culture has always been to be southern hospitality combined with knowing how to have fun. Its way more enjoyable to are around more like minded people that you either know or can relate to than a bunch of transplants with an array of viewpoints that don't mix well enough to allow people to be themselves. Whether its a GALA, Mardis Gras Ball, CCA/DU Banquet, Fundraiser, Golf Tournament, St. Patricks Parade, School Fair, etc. BR is way more preferable than in Texas.

What local culture does BR have?

The city certainly has architecture, music, food and lifestyles as part of its history of culture, but there is a new kind of cul'cha taking over, and it's not looking good for Baton Rouge.

Yep. I live in Tomball and not having to drive south to I-10 and get embroiled in inner city traffic frickery has been a Godsend. I can get from Tomball to my parent's house in Central in under 4.5 hours.

Well, unless my wife is with me. Then it's close to 5 hours thanks to her bladder being the size of a walnut.

Loved being in BR for college but left right after graduation. Spent about 3-4 years away and couldn't wait to get back. I missed the game days and being able to go to a mid week baseball or basketball game and being closer to family. I've now lived here 30+ years. I like my job, friends, church, food, LSU sports. However, the mayor and her gang of incompetents has made it even worse to deal with and now that I am planning for retirement, I am looking to get out of the state entirely. Governor elect Landry has stressed that he wants to get people to move back and his theme is "come back home, Louisiana". Curious to see if he actually can get anything done to improve things...but color me skeptical. Still looking for some retirement property in the Ozarks.

I miss being so close to Sportsman's Paradise and that's about it.

ETA: And the food. However, Baton Rouge still doesn't have great pizza or BBQ. Reason enough to find a new spot imo.
