You can't make a horse drink water. Until he's "sick and tired of being sick and tired" he's gonna continue drinking himself to death. Just last month, a friend of mine died from health complications due to cirrhosis of the liver at 52 yrs old. When he finally decided to get help, it was to late and he was turned away for a liver transplant.
Regarding: Intervention .... If you get a judge to sign off on a court order, the family member will probably check himself out of treatment after 72 hours. You truly have to want to get sober for YOURSELF. Your friend is in my prayers as I hope he sees the light.

Even if in jest, you did accuse a sober person of not being truthful about their sobriety, so it makes sense that they'd be sensitive about it.

Thinking about my former self in that position, I think denial would be my response to any attempt at help. I wouldn’t willingly cooperate. I think it’s probably helpful, nonetheless to tell someone they have a problem. They won’t appreciate it, and will probably avoid you for it, but the more they hear it, the more it may sink in.

Similar experience here.
After I got away from booze for a few months, I realized I never thought about it, even if I have people drinking around me. So I stopped going to meetings. That was about 7 years ago.

You're right! Pretty much impossible. When you're in active addiction or alcoholism you can't see just how fricked up your life is and the chaos that follows you. You start thinking it normal. When you have your AH-HA moment and admit that you're powerless and your life is in shambles, only then can you start to recover.
Its a bitch, and everyone has their own bottom. Some people never make it to that point (their bottom) and some people can't recognize it.

Sober since 2.26.17. For me it was/is the steps not the meetings. I attend now and then but its a very small piece of my "program of recovery". Like I said its living by the principles in the 12 steps which for me is about not being a selfish a-hole and being accountable to my higher power. It took me 20 years to get sober and countless meetings and rehab facilities and jail. None of it worked until I actually worked the steps.

I used to go with my best friend when we were kids.
We went for fun, out of boredom. We would listen to the stories and get creative inspiration.
They gave us coins too, and I really got into coffee around that time.

That was my big hangup.
Went to my first meeting tonight. The leader said something that really caught my attention.
Said the "higher power" can be anything/anyone bigger than yourself and alcohol.
Going to another group at noon tomorrow; may well go back to this one tomorrow evening.

AA is a scam. I paid the money and put the sticker on my car but when my car broke down they refused to give me a tow. So I got really drunk just to piss them off.
