I did see a family dollar next door to a dollar general in Laurel, MS. You could park in one lot and walk to the other store. I guess there is enough business for both in Laurel, MS.

They have good prices on batteries. Store brand 20 pack alkaline batteries for around $5. And they are pretty good batteries.

Have. I live about 18 miles from the larger stores like Walmart or a typical grocery store. Dollar General is much closer and an acceptable place to get the essentials like milk, butter & bread. You can even purchase a get well card. My DG is a bit cluttered up but it works. The cashiers also work in the store so I have to commonly go looking for them to check out. But overall, DG is acceptable.

thanks for the detail, gives a solid explanation of the point I made earlier

the prices LOOK better, but are in fact worse

still a great option when you're in a hurry or for those that are low on funds

DG is essentially a "convenience store WalMart"

Underrated Post right here folks.

Easily the best of the thread, imho.

I love Dollar General. Perfect for toiletries, batteries or whatever basic items you might need around the house. It’s much easier than going to a crowded Wal-Mart or Target for simple things..

Looks like DG is a hit! I wonder if there are Dollar Generals in Hollywood CA or NYC?

Worse is a marginal term at best.

The back of our receipts have a $5 off $25 purchase for a future Saturday.

In a fashion similar to some grocery stores, the prices may be slightly higher if you don't plan your shopping. But with grocery stores honoring double or triple coupons on top of sales, those "worse prices" are actually much better.

It only matters about how smart you shop and how much thought /planning you put into your week.

Damn right it is, I've been stopping in the one by me once a week to pick up Gatorade zero for a buck a piece for the 32 ounce.

It’s a way to save time instead of going to Wal-Mart.

Wally Mart tried competing with DG in rural areas with a smaller version of its big stores, comparable to DG. Didn't make the grade and Wally shut them all down. Highway west of town had a small family store that served food. Burnt down and I thought the area would be perfect for a DG. Somebody beat me to it.

Excuse the political comment, but the Leftists are bent out of shape about all the Dollar stores in the poor areas pushing out grocery stores. Remember the fight about Walmart pushing out the Mom-and-Pop stores by undercutting prices? Well, we have seen protests in front of Dollar stores squeezing grocery stores out of the hoods.

I’ve googled it, I believe it was something along the lines of Dollar General beat/matched Walmart on a majority of things in the food and store brand food products with a few exceptions.
Family Dollar has the best priced OTC meds/toiletries.

I love the song “Poor People’s Store” by Shinyribs. Pretty much sums up Dollar General or Family Dollar.

Shinyribs-Austin City Limits

“You can get more at the poor people's store, the poor people's store where you can get it

some knock off jeans with irregular seams
chairs made of beans and some beauty creams
Christine Auguilera black mascara
corn tortillas and some brown alovera

You can get more at the poor people's store, the poor people's store where you can get it

some socks with flames, pills for yer pain
razors infused with the essence of rain
cigarette lighter that says I'm no quitter
and a fish that sings take me to the river

You can get more at the poor people's store, the poor people's store where you can get it

panty hose, no doze and I suppose there's even some clothes
that you wear well and makes you smell, the smell you smell
when you get out of jail

You can get more at the poor people's store, the poor people's store where you can get it”

WoW! I thought New Blaine, Arkansas was small to have one the population there is 174, but I think that's also counting a few dogs.
