To each their own but I’ve noticed the parents we know that are super strict with time limits on things are the ones whose kids throw massive fits to use the things.
I agree with you there. And we aren't nazis about it for the most part. During the week we try and keep a time frame on it. During the weekend, she is usually outside with the neighborhood friends playing. At night she can play it all she wants which typically lasts for an hour or so and then she gets bored.

We have 3 kids between 1st-7th grade. I talk to a bunch of parents at school, sporting events, etc that tell me “I just can’t get them to put down the controller long enough to do…” it’s usually a frustration about grades or sports.
Played 3 sports, made straight A's, and played 3 hours of video games a night during the week in high school. Seems like the parents raised shitty kids.

I think this is the most important thing. It's not just kids that have a million distractions to pull them every which way these days, as parents we also have a million distractions. I have to constantly remind myself to "put down the phone and play with your kids" because these damn cell phones are built to peak your interest the SECOND you hear that "ding".
In some ways it's worst for me because I work in IT and that ding could be something going down that I need to look into - but over time I've learned my boss will call me if it's something I need to look into and have slowly been able to pull away from picking up my phone every time it goes ding.

that's the craziest thing I was about to comment on... my dad had never even touched a soccer ball before I started playing in elementary school. The old man was out in my back yard passing and kicking the sucker with me every afternoon after I started playing, the moments I played with my dad in the backyard growing up are some of the fondest memories I have.

There's the problem. Respect.

School
Family Time
Sports/Social Activities
Video Games/Youtube/TV
This is the order of importance we've taught my son since he started school. He sticks by it because we, you know, parent our child and make sure he sticks by it. If a parent "cant get them to put the controller down" i dont think the video games are the actual problem.

Yeah, but you sucked at the sports…

Does anyone watch the shows their kids are watching? In almost every single one of the sitcoms, the kids are the smartest ones on the show. The mom’s may also be smart, but the dad’s are almost always completely incompetent buffoons that’s garner more deserve any respect.
That’s a huge issue too, imo. Kids repeat what they see.

Billy Cosby was not a gamer. Don't let your kids grow up to be like Billy Cosby

Most gaming consoles nowadays have parental control features. You can easily restrict their access to certain days/hours or a set number of hours per day/week.

Sounds like you know shitty parents and let the kids run the house.
Kids today are surrounded by computers, moderation is a better alternative.

To put things into perspective. From 6th grade til about 10th grade when I got a job, my summers consisted of maximizing my time on my 360. I would spend 10-15 hours a day on my 360 during the summer and play till I fell asleep at night during school. I played a very unhealthy amount of video games.
I graduated with the biggest scholarship in my school. I have a bachelors and working on my masters and I absolutely love my job. Video games at a young age do not cause the damage that most people think it does.

None allowed at my house.
It shows in their grades.
And the scholarship offers.
Correlation and causation, learn it. My son games every day and has a 33 ACT with a 4.0. He'll have scholarships coming out of his ears next year. So am I to assume gaming causes excellent academic achievement?

Sometimes I read these parenting threads and think my parenting experience has been detached from reality. Or maybe my kids are just different. I don’t feel my parenting is some exceptional model for other parents, but I rarely experience any of the problems presented in this board. My kids can be little shitheads and they push their boundaries, but I’ve never had any grades or disciplinary problems with them at school.
And they’re not perfect kids. My son is a senior and I know he’s started smoking pot. I did my senior year of high school and I see all the same behaviors. We’ve talked about and he’s aware of the legal risks and social stigmatization with it in our area. He doesn’t drink though, and honestly I’d rather him smoke weed than drink.
My daughter is a freshman and we gave up on a strict bedtime a long time ago. She’s a night owl and will stay up until 2 or 3 in the morning a lot of nights. But she’s a straight A student and gets her school work taken care of, so we pick our battles. We probably give our kids more leeway on things than most parents, but they both are way more responsible than I was at their age. My parents were pretty strict and I rebelled against it.

I incentivize video game time for my son. He plays HS and AAU basketball. You dunk in a game? 30 minutes video game play time. 15+ points? One hour. Triple double? Do wtf you want bruh. Lil Breightinton balls out on the reg now.

I allow video games because I'm not a lazy, indulgent, parent and I do my job. I make sure to balance school, free time, sports, etc. Like all parents should. I'm not going to deprive my kids of things because I'm too lazy to regulate their activities.

She plays a couple of games on her iPad (roblox? I think)... she is allowed 15 min.
that's not even equivalent to a normal full length cartoon episode (a half hour).
why not make it 5 minutes?

I didn't have any in the house for the longest time. Now we have a Switch that we use as a reward. Kid does what he's supposed/expected to, gets set amount of time on the Switch. It has a timer and will shut off after an hour or two, or whatever you want to set on the parental controls. Also can't use it after 8pm, as it automatically shuts off. If the kid starts messing up, gets his privileges revoked. You can have video games in the house and not let the kid run amok with it. You're the parent, so you control things.
