I play video games but my children never really see me play them, I only play after they go to sleep. As my son and daughter get older I might play some with them on the weekends, but I have a feeling on the weekdays when they need to be socializing, doing homework, or going to events there will be almost 0 video gaming in the house while they are awake.

I'm a huge gamer, but everything is ok in moderation, and some people do let their kids play way too much video games. But to each his own, and I think as a gamer I also have a better understanding of what "too much" is, but also I know which games are appropriate and what to look for if my children start showing signs of gaming addiction. (and I also have a better grasp and getting them to put the controller down... shoot, they know I video game, but they know I never neglect stuff around the house or them to play them. Gotta lead by example)

ETA: We also don't watch TV in my house except the last 30 minutes before bed to "cool down".

All the kids I know that sucked at video games were also dumb and performed poorly in school. I on the other hand kicked arse in everything and then I got to college and had to learn how to study. Sucked but then I started giving myself tokens for every page I read. After 100 pages of reading I got a new life. Now I have all these extra lives that I don't know what to do with them.

My kids never cared much about them. They had an Xbox that probably had less than 100 hrs on it before I gave it away.

There are up and downsides to this form of entertainment just as there are to others. At the least, you may be able to use this as a tool to teach time management and moderation, both which will serve your children well during their life.

It’s a form of play. Why do you feel the need to manage this in an all or nothing manner? That’s not realistic for life.

No, my kids would much rather play outside, they play video games if it’s raining or on the weekends at night.

The parents who it become a problem for are probably lazy and use the video games as a crutch to not parent their kids

If you’re keeping things out of your house there are much better options these days

I feel like my kids have fun every day. They just don’t do it inside looking at a video game.

Son plays ball, girls do volleyball and gymnastics and we all like to fish and hunt

They have an Xbox, but it's the primary bargaining chip in the venerated case of Mom vs. Kids in our house.

Didn't do your chores, finish your homework, refrain from sibling-on-sibling crime. etc.? That's a week without Xbox. Want to argue? That's another week. Otherwise, they get 1 hour of "electronic time" a day, strictly enforced.

I play video games once or twice a week... and I'm 34 with an 8 year old. She plays a couple of games on her iPad (roblox? I think)... she is allowed 15 min. of playing time after dinner and before bath, after homework has been completed along with studies. Just balance the shite, dude.... it's not that difficult.

This right here. Also, if you don’t want them playing video games, go play with them. Make up some baseball or basketball game. Go play touch football or break out the board games.

I know I use the outdoor games as a way to get a little exercise for myself and my kids have a blast watching their fat old man goofing off with them

I had video games as a kid—OG Nintendo from Santa circa 88–and I chose to be outside playing sports the vast majority of the time.

God forbid they know and enjoy something a lot of their peers are doing.

Meh. Your kids will get 25000 grand in scholarships and It will still cost you 200000 to send them to indoctrination school.

My kids are in K and 3rd grade.

They are only allowed to play educational video games like Doom and GTA Vice City.

This is the worst aspect of modern parenting, IMO.

My parents never played sports with me. I don’t ever remember my old man doing any of that shite; the kids would all organize the games and we would play sports without parents. The ability of children to self regulate and manage themselves has all but eroded.

To each their own but I’ve noticed the parents we know that are super strict with time limits on things are the ones whose kids throw massive fits to use the things.

If you’re an active parent who is participating your kids will most likely want to do other things, I don’t see a problem with letting them play video games or watch an iPad after they’ve been playing outside for 4 hours or if I need to take a nap in the middle of the day on a weekend.

I guess I never realized how big video games were bc I only played them for a short time in college.

Apparently they’re a huge issue in marriages as well. I was shocked to hear how many grown men play video games at the expense of their responsibilities as a dad/husband. Teacher at kids school lives with inlaws, has two kids, and husband games all day/night while she’s at work.

I have an old Xbox 360 that I bought for my oldest son when he was younger. He could only play for an hour at a time and only on non-school days and only at night(rather him playing outside during the day). Same rule applies for my youngest son and it’s the same Xbox 360. His little padnas talk about playing yhe “newest” games and he has no idea. He does know how to fish, knows about guns and gun safety, knows how to socialize, and doesn’t melt when the sun hits him.

My situation is different. I don’t live in a neighborhood and there is no way for my kids to get to their friends without them either riding bikes on a major highway or me driving them. They can’t just decide to walk to the neighborhood park and play a pickup game.

I also have a boy and a girl so sometimes she wants to do gymnastics and all the time he wants to play tackle what ever moves, so that doesn’t mix.

My wife and I take up the slack sometimes when they each need to play without the other.

But you’re right, helicopter and bush hog parenting is severely delaying children’s development.

Eta
Your dad never threw the baseball or football with you? Never kicked your arse in pickup basketball?
