re: Anyone else been the victim of phone number "spoofing"?

Apparently, the scammer used a technique called "neighbor spoofing." The caller ID of such calls matches the area code and the first three digits of the recipient's phone number, which is more likely to be answered than calls that simply match the area code. This goes against The Truth in Caller ID Act of 2009, which prohibits spoofing to "cause harm, defraud, or wrongfully obtain anything of value," according to the FCC. So far, Abramovich has only been given a citation, which warns the violator that if the practices continue, they may be subject to additional fines.
They didn't fine him anything. And he made 96 million calls. The government is a joke.

If you answer they’ll stop calling
You have to spend at least enough time on the line with the call center guy for him to tell you to 'go frick your mother.'
I seriously noticed that, once I did that, they seemed to really decrease in volume.

I get five calls from St Francisville a day, all from different numbers. I keep blocking calls and I keep getting calls from new numbers.

I accidently linked an old article. They actually enforced the fine about a month ago.

The FCC has been trying to squash robocalls for quite some time and even adopted a new set of rules aimed at shutting them down late last year. Now, it has slapped one of the biggest robocall operators with a $120 million fine -- the largest amount it has ever imposed -- showing others like him that the agency is determined to take them down. The FCC has given Adrian Abramovich from Miami a massive penalty for being responsible for 96 million robocalls that used a scheme called "neighbor spoofing."

We had a lady call our home and threatened to find out where we lived and would be on her way to beat the crap out of us if we didn't stop calling her house to lower her credit card interest! Needless to say....it backfired on her! We called the police to file a threat claim on her! It was rather funny listening to her stutter as the police called her from here to explain what "spoofing" was all about!

This has happened to me several times. The person will call me and say they had a missed call and I say "I didn't call you" and then they say "well, I had a missed call". I usually hang up and block their number.
This practice should be grounds for going to prison immediately for life.

I had someone text me the other day saying “why did you call me?”
I replied with, “I didn’t”. This person instantly went nuts accusing me of lying and saying don’t call me ever again. I just replied with a few memes to piss them off.

Does anybody ever buy anything from these asshats??
It doesn't seem like it would be profitable bc I have never heard of anyone that listens to their pitch, much less buys anything.

This must be the go-to Indian guy insult. I constantly get the calls from American Pharmacy, an when I'm in the mood to frick with them enough to piss them off, "go frick your mother" is the most common insult I'm hit with.

Happened to me too. I was up to about 10 phony calls a day.
****There is something you can do about it****
Download the app "Hiya". On the app, you can create a rule to block all spoofing calls. It has eliminated almost all of the junk calls. I am a fan. I thought I was going to have to replace my number that I have had for almost 20 years.
Hiya has been awesome since I downloaded it about a month ago.

I called my cellphone from my cellphone once. That was interesting.

I was getting those a couple of weeks ago. What was odd was that the person "calling back" sounded like the same old African-American lady every damn time. She had to have called me 40 times and said "I just wanna know why you callin' me" every time. The same exact words, every time.

The complete and total lack of reading comprehension in this thread is alarming. Good job.

I no longer answer calls from numbers not saved in my phone. If it is important I will call back.

Every once in a while someone understands what the OP was actually about. Although now I know what to do if I start getting tons of telemarketers calling me.
Sounds like the problem is more widespread than I originally thought. Be terrible if someone owned a reputable local business and one of these reprobate telemarketers got a hold of their number. Surely the phone companies can do something so that people's numbers cant be "spoofed".

Hiya helps stop some of it, but not all. I still get my daily (sometimes 3 times a day) car warranty calls.
Today was my personal best of 12 minutes. When I'm bored at work, I frick with them. I usually let them go through the entire spill, which I almost know by heart now. Then it ends with them cursing me out and hanging up.
Not today though. Got to the part where they want my credit card number and I said, "5211 frick you, you scamming bitch." She got into an argument with me. I told her I was glad I was wasting her time like they do to people every day. She informed me she gets paid by the hour and had nowhere to go, so I called her bluff and kept on for a good while. Felt good, I felt like I got everything off my chest about how I felt about them.
