would this work?

EGO 56v 2.5 aH battery $149

the same model with a 5.0 Ah battery is on sale for $229. worth it for the battery upgrade?

CAD - Buy it. Home Depot will give you a 90 day return. I don't think you'll return it though. EGO is solid. I have two of their blowers (backpack and handheld) and love them. I had the mower, but returned it b/c it couldn't handle my thick grass. It looks like EGO beefed up the mower this year and I'm looking hard at buying one. I did have the trimmer for a short period of time and loved it. I returned it ONLY b/c I bought one without the battery and couldn't use it once I returned the mower. I wish I hadn't b/c I now have a battery since I bought the blower. If I go back and buy the new mower, I'll be buying that trimmer as well. I don't really use the backpack blower b/c the handheld works so well. The backpack was an impulse/craigslist purchase that now just hangs in my garage for occasional use.

eta how long does the battery typically last on this?
I think you'll get 30-40 minutes out of the 2.5 battery. The good news is the batteries operate at full power until the moment they cut off. So it isn't like you get 25 good minutes then it tails off.

2.5Ah is plenty for most yards, but if I recall correctly you have a fairly large spread? The smaller battery makes it a little easier to handle, but paying only $80 more for double the capacity seems like a good deal. Another 2.5Ah battery costs around $120.

its actually $219. just looked again.

thats my quandry; pay more for 2 2.5 ah batteries to have a hot-swappable or pay more for a larger battery for less switching.

yes i have a pretty tough yard; in particular the groundcover around the pool that goes up the hill.

The OP is referring to cordless(baterry operated) weed eaters -they have not been around for ages.

Didn't I say battery in my post? And spelled it correctly to boot...

yeah i'm going to want a blower as well. my current black & decker is a toy that lasts barely long enough to blow off the pool deck.

so my options: (EGO; bottom 2 are on sale at HD)

1. $249 for blower/trimmer combo w/ 1 2.5 Ah battery. (will need another battery or this combo is useless)

2. $149 for trimmer/2.5 Ah battery (would need another battery at some point & blower)

3. $219 for trimmer/5.0 Ah battery (would need blower)

I'm not sure which to start with b/c no matter which I pick i'll need to make a second purchase.

RECONDITIONED 2.5 aH battery $105

RECONDITIONED blower (530 cfm): $95

So $315 would get me a 5 aH battery trimmer & blower or $355 would get me timmer, blower & 2 2.5 aH batteries.

The B&D weed eater is a gem. I "upgraded" to a more expensive model/brand but still prefer the B&D. If I had to rank the ones I've tried, it would be like this:

1. EGO 56v
2. Snapper 82v
3. Kobalt 80v
4. Black and Decker 36/40v
5. Ryobi 40v
6. Greenworks 40v
7t. Black and Decker 20v
7t. DeWalt 20v
9. Black and Decker 18v (she was my first, but too weak to be effective)

which sounds better to you:

EGO Options

$315
- trimmer
- refurb blower
- 5.0 battery

$355
- trimmer
- blower
- 1 fresh 2.5 battery
- 1 refurb 2.5 battery

looking at 'in stock' home depot prices for all of the above. i'm more comfortable w/ a refurb blower than battery but i'm wondering if i'd be happier with 2 batteries at the start?

I'd get the refurb blower. They're very simple devices that are difficult to break so it's probably just a return or something.

edit: i personally like having multiple batteries for redundancy, but if you plan on adding a mower to the mix then you'll want the big battery.

i dont see this happening in my lifetime.

my yard is an a-hole. it is all on a hill with some parts being so steep its scary. i have a self-propelled regular sized unit (larger mowers can't handle all the cut-ins) and it takes on average 2 hours of solid mowing and i refill the tank 3x every single mow.

i dont think i could afford the batteries i would need to change to electric.

It's a tricky math problem b/c I can't seem to catch the batteries on sale and they are expensive.
quote:

2. $149 for trimmer/2.5 Ah battery (would need another battery at some point & blower)

Add the 530 CFM blower for $199; it comes with a 2.5 battery. This is what I have and it lasts about 15-20 minutes b/c I keep it turned up and use the turbo button a lot. It says 75 minutes of run time, but that is using the lowest setting. I can easily blow off everything on one charge.
$348 you'd have the trimmer, blower, two chargers, and 2 2.5 batteries.

quote:

3. $219 for trimmer/5.0 Ah battery (would need blower)

The 530 cfm blower (tool only) is $149. So you are only paying $50 for the battery & charger. it is worth it in my opinion to have two batteries. The batteries charge fast and if one goes out, you still have the other to use.
$368 you'd have the trimmer, blower, and one charger and one 5.0 battery.

Both options are good, but since I can trim or blow without using up the small battery, that is the route I'd go. you use may vary. I trim/edge then mow then blow. So my battery would be re-charging while mowing anyway.

my carb has never gummed up.

i spend less time "mixing" a 1 gal container buy pouring a pre packaged small bottle of oil that lasts me a month or more than you will spending time charging batteries and pulling your tampons out of your arse.

Holy shite. It's only a matter of time before autonomous mowers (think Roomba for grass) will get good enough to handle yards like that. In theory they could just continuously cut small sections at a time with recharging in-between.

I feel like some people that say gas is a hassle are comparing their electric purchase to poor quality gas equipment.
No it's not that the equipment is a hassle, it's that dealing with gas at all is a hassle. I have an Ego trimmer and a good size yard with lots of shite to trim around, and it eats through all of it and the battery still has probably 75% charge left. It takes all of 10 seconds to grab the battery, slide it on and start trimming. I never have to go to the station for gas, never have to mix it or buy pre-mixed, don't have to prime or crank. Unless you have a lawn service and need to trim for hours a day, there are literally no advantages to a gas trimmer.

yes another great option! since its only a bit more for the blower WITH another battery.

i think thats what i'm going to do. i like the idea of hauling around a lighter battery too.

I bought the Husqvarna 40 volt Max last year. It has two speeds, and I can weed eat most of my 3 acres (around
outbuildings, trees, flowers) with one charge using the low speed. I'd say it gets about 90% though on one charge.
Pros: easy to use, quiet, not as dirty after using, doesn't throw random rocks at my head or windows.
Cons: actually heavier than my 20 year old commercial Husqvarna, even on high it can struggle with thicker stuff, not quite enough juice with one battery to finish the job, and batteries are expensive.

Serious weed eating, I use my gas Husqvarna. If I stay on top of everything, I can get by with just the battery. I no longer use gas in the other one. Been using TRU Fuel for years.

i have a gas trimmer and i never have to go fetch a battery. i also don't have to look like a femine bitch while weed eating my man yard.

100% agree. my stihl trimmer has been nothing but trouble this year and i'm done dealing with it. the engine wouldn't rev up to full speed no matter how long i used it so i'm thinking its some kind of nonsense with the carb and i ONLY buy pure gas & 2 stroke oil for it.

I doubt it. You will waste more time making just one trip to the store than I will spend in an entire year of taking the battery off the charger and replacing it when I'm finished.

I feel like this is an issue entirely separate from gas vs. battery trimmer.
