Forgot the brake once.

Ended up in the middle of my street.

Drive one of these on pavement and you will quickly learn how little you know about driving a stick.

30 years of tractors, three vehicles over 150k miles, track days.

First time I tried to make a right on red in a busy intersection, stalled it. Locked rear end, light switch clutch engagement and 11k rpm rev range.

Ended up adding an anti stall that stops it from killing if you mess up the start.

Drove nothing but 5-speed sticks from 1983-2011. Enjoyed the extra pickup when pulling onto interstate traffic.

yes, I was not allowed to drive until I learned; as my first car was stick shift. I also had to parallel park a 1970's classic caddie in my sleep.

I daily a six speed manual. Didn't know how to drive stick when I bought it but made it home from the car lot without stalling once. Sitting here at 155K miles and still on the original clutch. It's not that hard to learn.

I didn't have my first automatic vehicle until I was 25. I get a chuckle every time we are on a plant site and tell one of the younger green horns to pull the truck up so we can start loading it and they come back wide eyed saying they cant get the truck to start. I ask them if the pushed the clutch in and get the what is a clutch response. My wife (no pics) is 32 and has no idea how to drive one but in my defense she scares the shite out of me with an automatic I am not adding another pedal to the mix

The majority of people under 30 today likely have no idea how to drive one

I started driving a tractor with a clutch when I was 12. Had to fasten a wood block to the clutch and brake so I could reach it. My girlfriend in high school could drive my three on a tree pickup in 1973. She was 15.

I can do it, but I'm really bad at it.

Last time I tried was in a Porsche (not mine), and I stalled it

I can get around in a Wrangler without completely ruining it though.

5-speed manuals with a clutch have become great anti-theft devices

Seriously though, somebody tried to steal my wifes manual civic when we were dating, found it a block away on the curb because it kept dying on them.

Learned with tractors, then moved up to an old stick shift Chevy S10. I actually think it's easier to start someone out on a big dump truck or box truck, won't die as easy when getting started. I would have hated learning with some small 4-cyl stick shift in a hilly place. I would have rolled back into everyone starting out.

It's not THAT easy. The hardest thing to learn is going from a stand still. They get it in your head that it's 1 to 1 on the clutch and gas, but that will mess you up if you're at a stop. It took me a few days to get the feel of how much to let up on the clutch and how much gas to give it. Once you're going, it's a piece of cake. Then it's learning about downshifting and how not to go from 2nd to 5th.

It was a rite of passage to have a stick shift in your first truck. Now it's a lost art form.....like using a blinker.

Downshifting too soon and getting jerked forward

Double clutch downshift. Learn it. Know it. Live it.

I used to travel an hour each way to work, so I just started practicing smoothly going from 5th to 3rd or 6th to 3rd and now, it's second nature.
