Family never had a car with a stick so could never learn.
And yes this makes me feel slightly inadequate as a man,

Don't worry baw. In 10 years nobody will know how to use a steering wheel.

I never owned an automatic until I was about 27.

I've been waiting for somebody to teach me for 32 years. My dad quit owning standards about the time I started driving. Nobody in my extended family had one.
I tried to go rent one a few years ago to learn. They don't even rent them.
It's futile.

Never had to drive one, so technically no.
I understand how they work, so if it was an emergency, I could probably make it work without the transmission falling out.

5-speed manuals with a clutch have become great anti-theft devices.

Understanding how they work and doing it without destroying the clutch are very different things

My wrangler has that built in anti-theft shifter.
Seriously, it takes all of 5 minutes to figure out how to drive a stick. It ain't hard padnuh

My first car was a standard and they are fun enough to drive, but after years of driving automatics, I can't really say I miss it. We're currently car shopping and I'm kind of surprised (but not really) that we don't see a lot of standards being advertised.

Had a Jeep for 12 years that was manual.
Traffic is a bitch, but you get used to it.
They’re actually pretty fun and your transmission last much longer than an automatic.

Heard from the backseat when my buddy had his kids riding in my hot rod.
"Why does he keep moving that stick thing around?"
Not only did they not know how to drive a standard, they had never been in a car with a manual shifter.
