Buut, the house I'm renting now (two years old) has the entire goddamned fixture as the light, rather than just the bulb. I hate that shite, because replacement is unnecessarily complicated (I know it's not rocket science, but it's also not 20 seconds on a ladder).

Do you think if a fluorescent fixture went bad, that changing the bulb would somehow make it work?
Do you sell LED lights or something? What’s your angle?

More often than not if you have to change a ballast it isn't much easier than a new fixture.
BTW you can buy LED shop lights with replaceable bulbs, they replace just like a T8 (for 4 ft) fluorescent.

The LED's will last for several years, replace the driver (common failure point) instead of the fixture and it will work like new.

Same with traditional fluorescent lights when the ballast goes bad.

I have a problem with having to spend a whole lot more time, energy, and expense for something that should be easy.
It’ll really be a problem when one goes out 10 years from now, the company you bought them from has discontinued them or gone out of business and your wife wants you to replace the other five in the room so they match.
But I’m sure the industry didn’t think about that at all when moving towards these things.

Removing the ballast in the fixture and replacing it with a direct wire LED set up wasn’t an option?
That’s what I did with my lights in the garage.

We just upgraded our plant to LED retrofit lighting, now half the plant is blinking like a christmas tree. It’s beautiful

I installed all LEDs 10 years ago and have yet to replace one.
I am honestly amazed. I figured that they were full of shite boasting about that length of time.
I even bought extras for the ones that needed to be replaced.
As of now, those are still in the box.

the leds last 4-5 years longer and use 10% of the energy that incandescents use. what's not to like.

1) It's not hard at all to replace that fixture, but yes, just swapping a flourescent tube would be easier.
2) They make LED flourescent tubes. If this is that big of an issue to you, and you're having to swap the fixture anyway.....

Yeah, and I’ve been in this house less than 4 years. It was a new build. I thought these LEDs were supposed to last like 20 years
It was a big lie. I change out LED more often than I did with old bulbs. They f’d us royally.

Actually, that’s exactly what you do/did when a fluorescent tube went out. Change just the tube that went out. VOILA!

Working overhead to replace an entire fixture for what should be an easy swap of a fluorescent tube is a giant pain in the arse.
That's why I don't use such fixtures in my house, traditional fluorescents in the kitchen, garage, and utility. My fiancée's mother's house is full of the damn things though, I couldn't convince her otherwise and it will certainly be me getting the phone call when the burn out.
