Same. The pics make it look much more difficult / precarious than it actually is, and I say this as someone who has never really climbed anything other than touristy stuff like this. The most dangerous part was coming down and navigating Asians with selfie sticks every few feet.

Without a doubt, this hike is the number one item on my bucket list.

I definitely didn't do this but I was in Yosemite this last week. It is truly an incredible place. The cable climb you show here is nothing compared to the guys we saw climbing El Capitan!

I watched Free Solo on the plane ride home yesterday. It's about a guy climbing El Capitan with zero safety gear. Absolutely insane.

While I’m about to check it off this fall, I’m more looking forward to the view from atop Clouds Rest.

I did it about 2 years ago. It’s a difficult but beautiful hike. The people with the harnesses have the hardest time because they have to clip in and out every few feet with one hand. My hands were not coming off of that cable. Occasionally you have to pass someone who is stalled and having a panick attack.

It is steep, but doable without too much upper body strength. If you fall to the side, you are screwed though. Happened to a lady a day after we hiked it. She was trying to pass someone who was struggling and moving slow. She slipped to the side and fell to her death. Apparently it was a slow slide and people were reaching to help her but she was just out of distance of reach.

I have a cables permit for this fall. Looking forward to it.

You have to get a permit first? What’s the procedure? I’d like to do it

You have to get another reservation just to get into the park.

If you have a cables or wilderness permit (or in-park lodging reservations), then you don’t need an additional reservation to access the park.

Entrance reservations

I may end up getting old before I ever get back to Yosemite, therefore I am willing to accept going to Tafts point or Sentinel Dome again.

I backpacked from Tioga Rd to Clouds Rest and then to Half Dome about 20 years ago. It was amazing. I practically had the trail to myself until I hit the John Muir/Half Dome approach Trail. Then it was like the check out line at WalMart!
Didn't summit that day because of the crowd and impending thunderstorms, but that view from Clouds Rest was worth the effort.
From the Yosemite Valley side, it's about 16 or 17 miles from Happy Isles to Half Dome round trip and about 4,500' of elevation gain and loss. You better eat your Wheaties. And water. Plenty of water.

I hiked Long's Peak and traversed to Torrey's Peak on 9/11/01. I guy at the trailhead told me a plane hit the WTC. I asked if he was sure it wasn't dome kind of radio shockjock prank. He insisted it wasn't.
I went on my hike, kind of wondering what happened, but assuming it was just an accident. By the time I got down, it was obvious it was a terrorist attack. Drove towards Denver and got a hotel room. Watched the news all evening and most of the night. Strange times.

Wanted to do Cloud's Rest on my trip in May but didn't get to because Tioga was closed until 2 days before I left and the crew I was with wimped out on the last day.

Yes I did it back in 2014. Fun fact, we actually started the hike at 2am with flashlights to beat the park rangers who got there at 8 because we didn’t have passes. It was one of the most adventurous things I’ve ever done.

I did it about 3 years ago. One of the best experiences of my life. I clipped onto the cables but there were a lot of folks that didn’t.

It’s about an 8 mile hike to get to the cables with a mile of elevation change to get to sub dome. Sub dome was great because there were people trying to talk themselves into it and people trying to talk themselves out of it.

It’s slick granite so most of the deaths are in the mid afternoon when the rain/lightning start. So if you do it I would recommend starting the hike before the sunrise.

Some of the scenery on the way there/back is breathtaking.

I highly recommend it if you’re at all thinking about it. Yosemite itself is a blast even if you don’t do half dome.

Yeah but climbers with ropes and vertical walls is a different world. The cool thing about climbing up the cables on the back side of Half Dome is that it's for everyone. You don't need special skills or experience, and when you get to the top you have an incredible 360° view, and you feel like a hero.

For me a hidden gem of Yosemite hikes is Mt. Dana (the 2nd highest mountain in Yosemite). You start at the Tioga Road entrance, it's only a three mile hike, you go from 10,000 to 13,000 feet, then you scramble up some sharp rocks to a true peak with a spectacular 360° view of the mountains and down to Mono Lake. There's even an ammo box with a register.

I've been on a ton of trails in Yosemite, but the hike from Tenaya Lake to Clouds Rest to Half Dome (then down to Curry Village) is the one great hike I never did. I'm getting old now, but maybe I'll be able to do this before it's too late.

Did it 40 years ago. Not that hard. I was young then.
