Anybody do the Half Dome cables hike at the Yosemite National Park?

WTF is this shite? Looks like a fricking traffic jam. All it takes is one guy with no safety harness tumbling down and wiping everyone off their feet. The below ranger video shows so many guys with no harnesses or even gloves going up and down the cables.

Sounds like a good time while your wife is behind you bitching about a lack of sunscreen and water.

Nope, I have a full dome.

why is everyone so white?

Yes, I've done it. Twice.
No one came rolling down like a bowling ball either time. I guess I got lucky.

no one wears a harness, its not that kind of deal. Gloves are recommended though.
that said, someone could definitely fall but its like climbing a staircase (slightly understating it but not as steep or crazy as it looks), its not like they will just fall forever.

I have never climbed the cables but I have used it to get down after climbing the Southwest Face.
The climb really isn't as bad as the pictures make it look, other than the crowds which is just a modern fact of life everywhere in the valley these days. It really is more of an exposure mind frick for people than the actual difficulty/danger of the climb. It is like the difference between walking across a 4x4 6 inches off the ground vs 100 feet. 90% of able bodied people can do the first a small fraction of those can do the latter even though it is the exact same thing.
Gloves are more useful coming down than up to protect your hands.

As you are probably aware, there are a pile of gloves at the bottom of the cables.
The pics make it seem to be steeper than it is, but when I saw some people ascending outside the cables, I thought they were nuts.

Yep about 20 years ago. This was after a 12 mile hike so pretty exhausted. It's difficult but once you are on top it's awesome. Highly recommend...once.

Do you think as a free climber you might be a tad underestimating how hard that climb is for the average Joe who probably doesn't have the upper body strength or muscle endurance to go through something like this without struggling, assuming they don't first freeze from the fear of height itself?

I've done the cables about four times. Once I camped on top (when it was still allowed), and three times as a day hike (16 miles round trip I think). When you're approaching the cables, it looks as scary and steep as the pictures, but it's not that bad.
A guy I grew up with, Jim Zellers, was the first (and probably only) person to snowboard down the dome, near the location of the cables. I don't know how the snow stuck to the rock, but he was able to do it twice.

Yes, I’ve done it with my 12-year-old son. And while it is a bit scary it is not as steep as pictures always look. Get to the trail at early, around 6 AM, and you won’t have a long line when you get to the cables.

I have a cables permit for this fall. Looking forward to it.

I've done it. Cables weren't that scary, honestly. Going up there was no one there yet. So I had them all to myself. It was a b coming down through because by the time I decided to come down they looked like the pics you have posted.

All I know is that if there is the possibility of a thunderstorm you do not want to be on that dome. The whole thing gets charged.
quote:
Thunderstorms bring lightning, a powerful force that can result in death. In July 1985, lightning at Half Dome killed two people and injured three others (two of them, critically).
Though most common June through September, thunderstorms can happen any time of the year. During July through September, the North American monsoonal weather pattern can cause moisture from the Gulf of California to flow into the Sierra Nevada, resulting in thunderstorms.
Ultimately, there is no safe shelter outside. The only safe place is in a substantial building or hard topped vehicle.
