This is definitely going to be a pet scenario.

Do some research on the more docile breeds that are still good producers. I’d recommend Golden Comets, Buff Orpington, or Barred Rock.

We had 4 or 5 when my kids were younger and we lived in a subdivision. We'd let them roam our fenced in backyard during the day and close them up in their coop at night.

Like another poster said, they have distinctive personalities and be fun to raise. We would go out back with treats for them and call them and they'd come running to the back porch. Talk about funny to watch. My daughter used to paint their toenails as well.

I'd recommend them just for the experience.

Here's an added bonus: if you have scorpions in your yard, chickens eat the hell outta them sumbitches.

Consider raising quail as an option. You can use them for meat and eggs. When compared to chicken much less space is required. Check YouTube for info.

We got chicks this past spring. 5 hens. The eggs we’ve collected so far have cost roughly $20 each.

Holy crap. My wife is on the chicken train. She's thinking she's mother hen. We got a premade coop 2nd hand (tractor supply one) that has a 10' home made run we will put on it. Not sure yet on the free range.

But the chicks are 3.5 weeks and getting ugly now. My wife takes care of them 100% because I wanted nothing to do with them. She came to me the other day with this sad look on her face and said.... 'the chickens hate me'. LOL They're so skittish and don't really want interaction. We must have watched 100 youtube videos and these chicks act nothing like the tamed ones in videos. They refuse to eat any eggs or treats or anything except their starter grower.

We don't have too much in these since we got the coop 2nd hand and only paid $150 for it. Hell, I couldn't buy the hardware cloth to cover it for that. I'm sure reading these posts though for any tips/ideas.

I do and have for many years.

Get a predator proof coup. It can be very tricky.

Also, keep it clean as possible or else you’ll get a bad fly problem

Otherwise, it’s an enjoyable hobby

Only a couple people posted the benefit of chicken crap as a fertilizer. While the eggs are a plus, you can turn chicken poo into garden fertilizer gold.

I know snakes get in to try and eat the eggs so that is a big nope for me.

True story:
My Grandmother used to put golf balls in the nest boxes. Ol' no shoulders would show up looking for an easy meal and eat the ball. We'd occasionally find a dead chicken snake with a round, undigested object in it.

I have actually heard of that also. I spend too much time reading hippie off grid nutrition and lifestyle things obviously.

***because I have read a lot about it and have no desire to have chickens

We have 6 right now. I live in the country on 4 acres. We have a coop and a fenced in run. They roam free during the day and go in when starts to get dark. My kids shut the door to the run after they go in.
