Any of y’all raise chickens?

Hubby is wanting chickens. I’m thinking maybe 3 to start but I’m wondering what life as a chicken tender looks like.
Do you just buy a chicken coop and keep them in there or do they need outside time?

I know snakes get in to try and eat the eggs so that is a big nope for me. I will totally buy local eggs from others though.

We have six in the city. We normally let him out in the morning and put them up before we go to work. Then they just wander around the backyard once the kids get home from school. The rest of the time when we're not around, they stay in the coop. He will need a bigger Coop than most of the starter kits. Plan on getting one that's at least 6x6 or so

We have a pool, do you think that would be a problem? I have no idea if chickens can swim or not.

In the country, some bigger snakes do that. However, our Chickens have probably killed a handful of snakes in our yard. Longest one being about 18 in., it's a kick to watch them fling it around the yard

I have raised chickens. I would never raise chickens again. There isn't enough cost savings in it for my family, We don't eat that many eggs.

My cousin started with 4. Now they have an entire chicken farm in less than a year. It's become costly af, but they love it.

I have both meat and egg chickens. You can buy a coop with an attached run that will always keep them contained while allowing for them to roam more freely during the day. Just close their access to the run at night to protect them from predators.

If you’re married and don’t know how to raise a cock, there are larger problems than finding a coop.

Yet you only hear about it when a white chicken kills a black snake

It's true, there's no economic way of justifying it. In fact, we made a deal with our daughter that if she reimbursed us she could sell all the eggs to the neighbors. She's sold several dozen, but I have yet to see a penny of that money!

They can free range and will return to roosts at dark. They crap EVERYWHERE and a lot. You dont have to let them free range but you should have a run for them if so. You should secure them at night somehow or a coon will eventually assassinate them. Automatic chicken coop doors are cheap and worth it. We agreed to start with 4-5 then the wife came home with 20….they were 2-3 week old chicks in May. We just started getting eggs last week. Also you will lose some due to nature. We have 19 now. I built a 6x6 coop and we buy the Purina and Dufour food for them at Tractor supply where we get our ivermectin paste for us and the kids

My wife’s friend is some soap making hippy chick that wanted a free range lifestyle for her chickens. I warned her that if she didn’t have dogs more capable than her Pomeranian, predators would kill her chickens. Within a week, everything from hawks to coyotes killed them all.
She doesn’t keep chickens anymore

It is my understanding that they have cute personalities like pets also.

Don’t do it. I did that for a few years and it was the biggest pain in the arse. I didn’t have time to clean the coop out regularly and it became a giant stinky mess. Wasn’t worth it so I eventually gave the chickens away and tore down the coop.

Did she live in the suburbs or the country? We are in a suburb but not all that far from cane fields.

If you have the right set up, it is way less work than a dog. I made feeders and waterers out of 5 gallon buckets that I have to refill 1-2 times a week and take a shovel to get poop under the roost bar while I'm out there.
Other than that I just pick up eggs every day and let them roam around the backyard all weekend. It is pretty easy.

Be warned it’s much cheaper to buy eggs from the store if just raising a handful of hens.
