They’ve been exploring this idea for 15+ years
I can confirm such an idea was mentioned to us during Spring Testing in Spring of 97,

So they want freshmen to live on campus, but don't want them to have a vehicle in a city/state that has shite public infrastructure?
They want them to live on campus and will eventually provide them with a garage off-campus to store their cars.
A lot of colleges do this.

what the hell would be the point of this???

Same. I walked all over that campus those first two years when classes were spread out.

ULL has been doing this for years. You park at Cajun Field and take the bus to campus. ULL figured out long ago that it's just not feasible to have everyone park on campus given the limited space and large number of commuters.
LSU is just catching up. Paving over the levee, cow pasture, and hay field lots into one big lot with shuttles to a central spot on campus would solve a lot of problems with day to day congestion on campus. It would also improve gameday parking, especially when some of those lots are waterlogged.
As for the freshman car thing, if it happens, it's likely going to take the form of "off campus parking with shuttles for access", like it does at many other schools. They can't stop you from having a car, but they sure as hell can stop you from parking it on campus. It's just not realistic to expect 30,000 people to be able to all park on campus comfortably, so you make the underclassmen park elsewhere and reserve parking for faculty, staff, grad students, and upperclassmen (in that order) who have more time invested in the university. You know, like ULL does.

This is not uncommon at other universities. At the university that my daughter attends, there is no parking pass available for freshmen, who are required to live on campus.

Has always been that way at Purdue and the other big 10 schools.

Went trough the Master Plan. See they plan to demo Middleton and Lockett. Did see they plan to build new library pretty much where the ROTC building is. What will happen to my historic ROTC building? Also, why don't those in charge just go a head and buy the land north of campus all the way to the Interstate?

They didn’t ban freshman from living off campus. They required them to live on campus if they didn’t apply for a waiver.
And there were plenty of waivers issued (location, family, cost, etc.)
It's not that easy and compelling circumstance exemptions are not automatic.

I never said they were automatic but anyone that made a compelling reason to live off campus as a freshman, was granted.
And compelling isn’t “my son wants to live with his buddies in their Brightside apartment”
It’s “My Family can’t afford housing. My son is paying his way through school and living at his Aunt’s house off Coursey to save money.”

Must not be that historic if you don’t even know where it’s located.

Not exactly against this. But they need to improve the on campus dining options and the public transit. They are making strides in both of those areas.
They also need a secure remote parking facility with shuttle service for freshman from outside the area that use their cars to return home.

Yeah, that's a pretty much it. Didn't mean to imply you said that just putting out the info because I wasn't certain that was clear.
The ever increasing incoming freshman classes with the insistence they live on campus is probably at least partially what's driving the freshman car ban but I am curious about the specifics(like is it any freshmen or just the freshman commuters).
On the parking situation, a better solution for on campus would be one of the following, I would think:
1. A tiered purchase system based on classification
2. A weighted lottery based on classification
3. A random lottery
Anyone losing out would get those off campus parking lots. UL Lafayette kind of does this. People park at Cajun Field and busses run on a schedule between campus and Cajun field. It works fairly well. WVU had a tram system when a friend of mine went there over 40 years ago.

The dining is much better now than it was when I went there back in the early 80s.

They won’t need a car ban. There’s still more spots available than passes. The “issue” is that most of these available spots are in far flung lots west of Nicholson.
Moving most there may be a possibility, but will have bus system and security for these lots.

Freshman living on campus - no car
Freshman that’s commuting - car

Haven’t read all 5 pages, but it’s not as bad of an idea as some would make it out to be.
1. Freshmen already have to live on campus unless they are from BR (those who do live with parents and commute would, I’m sure, be exempted).
2. Because they live on campus, they don’t drive to class anyway.
3. Dining halls are on campus, so no reason to leave for food.
4. Having to take a bus ride to your vehicle is not the end of the world when you eat and sleep on campus.
Policy would probably improve class attendance for freshmen, and consequently help reduce the attrition. Would also do wonders for availability of parking on campus and the area’s traffic in general.
All that said, I would be pissed if I was an incoming freshman and they implemented this policy.

Did you even go to LSU bro? Dining halls are terrible. They shut down the Mag room in the union which was the best place on campus for lunch outside of faculty club 2 years ago.
They are only open from like 7am - 9pm and don’t have actual food half the time. I don’t think the 459 is open everyday either.
