offer a recommendation?

I recommend you get the hell out of Hammond, whether by train or plane, car or bike, skateboard or roller skates.

That was my one time on an Amtrak. So i highly recommend

Rode from hammy to Memphis a bunch of times.

Takes about 2hrs longer than driving directly.

Food is comparable to airplane food

I got sleeper rooms and drank at the bar car most times.

It is not like a euro rail you see in the movies. The ride is a bit shaky

Overall it’s a cool experience but does suck when you’re stopped for freight traffic (they have right of way)

....I did the City of New Orleans to Chicago once. I enjoyed the heck out of that. Even slept in the thing. Food was great. I recall we had to stop once early in the morning to let another train pass. Not the smoothest ride for sure (especially in a sleeper car), but hey I can sleep on a rock if necessary. Everyone should try an Amtrak trip at least once in their life. Slow and easy. Unfortunately people don't want slow and easy anymore.........they want fast and loud.

I haven't been on one in a couple of years. I've taken them from DC to Austin, Portland to Seattle and back frequently for work, Emeryville, CA to Denver a couple of times and New Orleans to Lake Charles and Lafayette and back frequently. If you get a sleeper that includes 3 meals a day. You can also bring any food onboard. You should do it. I've met some really nice folks riding the rails.

I’ve done one from Nola to Memphis. It’s slow. Frequent stops. Smooth ride. Pretty spacious. Kind of a wash overall.

Can you just get drunk and chill? Never been on one and always heard it sucked. But I'd like to take one instead of driving.

Took the Amtrak from NOLA to Birmingham several years ago

Like one poster said there are some characters you would never know existed

One guy on my train was a literal self appointed tour guide. Everything you passed he gave a summation of, the history of, and a joke about it.

We passed the Metairie cemetery and he made some joke about “Yeah it’s pretty exclusive... people are just DYING to get in.”

This was all done with him standing in his seat and looking around speaking loudly as if this was his literal job

Definite Aspergers

Honestly maybe I shared an Amtrak with TulaneLSU... who knows

Amtrak’s stop in every mid sized city. PITA.

The only time I’ve been on a train was on the Amtrak out of Hammond on a field trip in elementary school 30+ years ago.

Chicago is awesome. More south Louisiana folks would appreciate it if they gave it a chance. It's their kind of city. Very good food, reasonably nice people, and a clean downtown area.

Try the Art Institute and take a river cruise (wait until May or so for better weather). Definitely head over to the west loop and try the awesome restaurants out there.

I quite enjoyed going over the Huey on a train.

I thought it was weird crossing the Susquehanna River at Harrisburg and not seeing anything beneath the train but water.

Not sure I'd like the Huey Long or one of the taller bridges like that.
