Fair criticism. Chicago in the winter is like Summer in Louisiana - you stay indoors if at all possible.

But summer in Chicago really is a great experience. I'm glad I got to live in west loop for as long as I did before Covid.

I haven't ridden the train from Hammond but I have taken it twice. Once from ATL to New Orleans and once from NO to KC.

If something is going on, either on the tracks or with the tracks, or if another train is out there on the same tracks, you sit. And sit. And sit.

We could see the train station in New Orleans and just sat. And sat. And sat. It's not like they'll let you off to walk to the train station.

On the trip to KC, it was two cold to separate the train (one group was going to Chicago, the other to KC) so they dumped us KC people off in Carbondale, IL in the middle of the night to wait for a train to pick us up.

If you have the bad luck to be in this situation, an 8 hour trip can turn into 12. or a 20 hour trip into 28.

I rode it from Memphis to Hammond once. Closest to teleportation I've ever experienced. The train left at like 4:30am. I just stayed up all night partying with my buddies, made it on the train, and laid across 3 seats. Next thing I know, the attendant is shaking me saying "sir, we're in Hammond. This is your stop."

I’ve taken that train from Champaign, IL to Hammond before and I wouldn’t do it again. Plenty of stops and it took exactly the same amount of time as it would’ve taken had I driven. Sure, I had the luxury of not driving and just “relaxing” but it cost me the same as a plane ticket would’ve cost so I don’t think it’s worth it at all.

Never done Amtrak. Heard trip to Chicago from Nola and likely through Hammond was a loud, long nightmare.

OK. On the train. Got a two person sleeper. About 6 foot by nine feet. Staff seems nice. On one at the station at Hammond though. So sort of blind in getting on and finding right car. Train rolls side to side. Sort of like a boat on calm water. Bathroom area in my room is tiny. More later as trip goes.

I find it to be a great comfortable ride, and very reasonable....only downfall is no car when you arrive....
runs about 85mph, but does stop quite often.
I love the train ride when it fits the trip.

Food was sort of all in one frozen TV dinner type. But served timely and dessert was good. Seems like good alternative choice in these virus times. Little or no contact with other travelers. Seems safer than on a plane or in an airport.

What’s one of the big sleeper cars run? Could you fit 5-6 people in it?

I’ve ridden Amtrak’s all over the US, but haven’t in close to 5 years. Parents have done Hammond to Memphis probably 3x in the past year. It’s nice to hang out, have a drink and enjoy the ride.

Last trip I took was Nola to DC. Our battery car caught on fire in the middle of absolutely no where at like 2 AM and we had to evacuate while this podunk city’s fire department tried to fight the blaze.

No top bunk is a cot. Bottom is a single. Three maybe if two could sleep in the single. No way for more

They have a family room available on the longer routes but I don’t know the costs. I think it sleeps 4-6 people but it may not have a bathroom in the suite like dinosaur’s room has.

The regular rooms have their own bathroom and a card table. They sleep 2 and have porter service. Not a bad way to travel during Covid because you never really have to leave the room.

Then you have the standard seats which are fine for 7-10 hour trips. You can get up and walk to the bar/dining car. I sat in the standard seats between Pittsburgh and NYC. Not sure about doing this during Covid pandemic though.
