re: Amtrak Train out of Hammond
I took it from New Orleans to Chicago, DC, Atlanta, and Houston.

The Crescent line to DC is my least favorite because it’s single decker because of a tunnel in Alabama.

But the other two lines are pretty damn cool. I quite enjoyed going over the Huey on a train.

My parents are taking it out of Hammond to Chicago next week. They got a private suite to help isolate during Covid. Chicago’s union station has been much less busy than usual lately so it should be a pleasant experience.

Parking is free at Hammond.

They would rather take a train out of Baton Rouge. But Amtrak is kind of weird like that.

I’ve taken an Amtrak from Atlanta to Slidell and enjoyed it. It’s cheaper than flying and you don’t have to worry about wear and tear on your car with driving. Only negative is that it’s a long ride with a couple stops.

On the seating is it like an airplane or bus, just big car with tons of seats?

If you don’t get a roommette, the coach seats are similar to a plane (2 on each side of the isle) but much larger. Not quite as big as a Lay-z-boy, but similar in size to a barber shop chair. The overhead bins are massive and can fit the big 50 lb suit cases you normally have to check on a plane.

Plenty of room to spread out even for very tall people. WiFi is okay but not good enough to stream Netflix. Food is like a concession stand, but the longer trips have much better dining cars than the shorter routes.

We last took Amtrak to go to NYC from Pittsburgh. I imagine the cars are pretty similar nationwide though.

Ride is smooth and quiet until we got to straight stretches in eastern PA and NJ where they move 100+ mph. The old Amtrak coaches (NOT Acela) rattle and shake a bit at those speeds.

The food is not nearly what it used to be. The dining used to have great food (see 60's menu below). Amtrak at one time had decent food, now it is more like airline food.

In the 30's, meals on a luxury long-distance train rivaled the meals at the finest restaurants.

That Texas Central one that they’re doing from Dallas to Houston is gonna be legit. 90 minute ride. Opposed to 3.5 hours. One stop in the brazos valley station near Navasota. It’s gonna be HUGE

re: Amtrak Train out of Hammond
One of my favorite quick weekend trips I’ve done was take the train to Chicago for a Cubs game. Brought my own liquor on board. Had a cabin. Was a fun little trip. If you have a sleeper car your meals are free. Make sure you get a cabin with a shower in it otherwise you have to take a shower in another room. Not a problem but the 2 person cabins are small. The ones with bathrooms in them are so much larger. Do it and have a good time

Actually it’s because of clearance restrictions on the northeast corridor and the Hudson River tunnels going under the river into Manhattan. All trains into NYC have to meet this height restriction. The tunnel east of Birmingham is tall enough to fit double-stack intermodal cars through it. Also the double decker cars are limited to 90mph.

Yup, those old Amfleet coaches were state of the art back when they were built... in 1974. They rattle and shake like sardine cans.

The double decker Superliners used on the western routes and the Capitol Limited from DC to Chicago are roughly the same age but much smoother.

re: Amtrak Train out of Hammond
Off topic, but I didn't want to make a thread just to ask this and Hammond reminded me. Anyone know what the construction is for between i310/i55 and Vets in Kenner on I-10? Are they adding lanes or making an elevated exit of some kind?

Edit: To bring it back to the train, isn't the hammond one the one you can take from Nola to Chicago or is that a different one?

The geniuses built a new airport terminal and no road to get to it. Gonna be an elevated off-ramp, I believe.

Ahhh thank you. Now that I think about it, I think I may have heard something about an airport exit a while back and forgot. I passed it for the first time in a while today and it was confusing me. Thanks.

If you do not get a sleeper, I am not sure how cheap it is, though it has been a while. If no sleeper, sit in the middle of the car as 1) it does sway a lot & sitting reduces a lot of the sway. 2) do not get a car on either side of the bar car as you will get all the traffic coming & going there. Back then a LOT of stops, thus it was like 14 hrs to Chicago.

Yeah I figured it took an eternity. I remember reading somewhere something about AL Capone would take the train down to New Orleans to come hang out with Silver Dollar Sam and go to the race tracks and shite.

While I have no legitimate interest to ever visit Chicago besides deep dish, that sounds like a fun adventure. I had a few friends that took a train(s) from Houston to California and they seemed to enjoy it. I'm sure it will be a fun time.

We rode an Amtrak from San Francisco to Reno once, my dad was from N Louisiana and went to the smoking car to have a cigg.

He came back "real quick" so I asked what the problem was.

He says "They are all smoking down there but it ain't cigarettes"

I went with a group on the Crescent from New Orleans to Tuscaloosa for an LSU vs. Bama football game.

I'll admit, I was apprehensive thinking I would see the tail end of every trailer park between the two locals. I was wrong. Beautiful scenery.

And the last two cars was a big LSU tailgate party without bar-b-q pits, everybody brought their own libations.

Time wise, it was about the same as taking a car.

Yes, I'll be taking another train ride soon.
