Amtrak Train out of Hammond
Anyone been on it recently and can offer a recommendation? How was the ride, food, comfort, etc.? Is there lots of stops and delays or not too bad? Was it worth the cost?

Where do you plan on going? I’m sure you can look a lot of that up.

I’ve always wanted to do that, but I’m sure you have to wear a damn mask now.

I’ve done one from Nola to Memphis. It’s slow. Frequent stops. Smooth ride. Pretty spacious. Kind of a wash overall.

I have two weeks off before I start my job full time and I’ve been looking for things that I can do during those two weeks. Maybe I’ll do that. Sounds fun.

I know for a fact that they run through Crowley so that alone is worth the price of admission

That stretch of CN/Illinois Central track through Tangipahoa Parish is the Killing Fields at the road crossings.

Jesus, there are plenty of terrible accidents there.

Worth it. The City of New Orleans train will drop you off in Memphis at 10 and Chicago the next morning at 9am.

Food onboard is OK, better than airline fare but equivalent to a Denny’s.

Get a sleeper car room if you’re going to be on past Memphis.

So much better than flying or driving. I take Amtrak all the time. I am actually on a train down to Florida now as I type.

Yup. No gates at a lot of those crossings. 79mph train + dumb unaware drivers = carnage

It is very slow and there are some characters you didn’t even know existed as fellow passengers.

Also, it’s been a while since I’ve been on it but goes through very rural areas the majority of the time and cell service is spotty

I took the train from Hammond to Chicago about 30 years ago. It was pretty cool.

Thanks Vols, what I was looking for on info. Never done it and was thinking might be a fun trip with family of 4 instead of having to do the driving.

On the seating is it like an airplane or bus, just big car with tons of seats? Are there TVs etc. or do you have to bring your own entertainment? Are there cars specifically for dining that you go to? Also how is the noise?

It’s airline-style seating, but with more than twice the room and the seats recline all the way back. There aren’t any TV’s or WiFi so bring your own shite. There is a lounge car with panoramic windows in which you can sit and just chill, and a dining car where you can eat meals. You will hear the horn sounding at crossings and the hum/clicking of the steel wheels on the rails, but relative to driving I’d say the noise level is about the same.

If I had the time to take, I’d love to take a vacation and do this. But with no PTO, it’s hard to justify the extra days it would take to/from

I wanted to do it until I realized how much time it wasted. Maybe one day to a somewhat close SEC stadium.

food

They shut the dining car just before last thanksgiving (so non Covid related). Only food offered is sandwiches and such in the bar car.

I used to ride the train occasionally, but haven't been on it in 15 years.

Posters here may talk about people on a train being sketchy. Ignore that. People on the train are Beverly Hills society compared to people on a Greyhound bus.

I once heard they will let you bring on a cooler full of food and drinks, though I never did that myself.

There are a bunch of videos on YT from people who ride the train. Check out some of those.

I brought my own booze back when I drank, and they don’t scan any of your stuff, so bringing food etc wouldn’t be a problem.

I took Amtrak to Chicago in 2016 for the LSU opener at Lambeau and a Cubs game during the World Series season. Amtrak was a big plus on that trip. No travel stress.
