An American contracted Ebola while working in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the outbreak is spreading across parts of Africa, U.S. health authorities said.
The American developed symptoms over the weekend and tested positive late Sunday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday.
The U.S. government is planning to fly the person and six high-risk contacts to Germany for treatment and monitoring, said Dr. Satish Pillai, the incident manager for the CDC’s Ebola response. The CDC didn’t identify the person or specify the nature of their work.
Serge, a Christian organization, said its missionary Dr. Peter Stafford was exposed to the virus while treating patients at a hospital in northeastern Congo. Two other doctors, including Stafford’s wife, and the couple’s four children were being monitored, the organization said.
An outbreak of the potentially deadly virus began in Congo and has spread to neighboring Uganda. The World Health Organization declared a global health emergency this month over the Ebola outbreak.
“To the American public, the risk to the United States remains low,” Pillai said.
About 80 people have died and around 250 possible cases have been reported, according to the WHO. The agency said there were likely more cases that had not yet been detected. Authorities identified the first case in April. The WHO warned that neighboring countries are at high risk for further spread.
Ebola, a viral disease with no known cure, spreads when someone comes into contact with blood or body fluids from an infected person. There is no vaccine for the Bundibugyo virus that caused the outbreak, unlike for other Ebola strains. The strain kills about 30% of people who contract it, according to the CDC.

Sounds like a great idea

I genuinely do not understand the urge of some western doctors to go to the middle of these Ebola outbreak hotzones
You aren’t saving the world, you aren’t even providing life saving care that African nurses and doctors don’t know how to perform
Ebola treatment is purely symptom relief. There is no cure. There is no anti viral.
These doctors go there to get that coveted Instagram pic. Local authorities do not want them there

Guilt and pity is why they do it. When you work a profession for decades that gives you a high-income and allows you to accrue large amounts of wealth, you start to feel sorry for less fortunate people.

Yeah but this dumbass brought his wife and 4 kids along for the ride.
That's just insane.

I miss the Ebola scares before Covid.
Those were innocent days.

I clearly have not worked in the profession long enough

Maybe for some. Same for medical students and pre-med students who go, but the majority go for an addition to their CV or for "the experience". In their defense, they may not realize prior to going that they really are mor of a nuisance than help.
But doctors in the middle of their careers... they know. There's 99% chance it's a publicity stunt or a career requirement, most often the former. Look at a local BR orthopedic surgeon...who goes on a medical mission trip that 225 features? Who adopts a kid from another country that The Advocate writes a story about? With regard to the latter, adopting parents without ulterior motives would absolutely reject that publicity. But not if you're eyeing the PSC and then ultimately the US senate or LA governor.

Probably like the mission trip folks who go to Haiti. Bet most of it is for publicity. Then everyone says “awww” when they are murdered. Plenty of mission work in the USA.
