That's not alternative history, that was called "Reconstruction". From 1865-1877 anyone who served in the confederate military or held a position in a confederate government (parish/county, state, or national) was barred from voting or serving in any public office. Since nearly every white male was drafted and women had no right to vote, the only people who COULD vote or hold office were freed slaves and "carpet baggers", wealthy northerners (typically war profiteers who made their fortunes off of contracts to supplu the union army) who moved south and bought bankrupted (or ceded to the state on account of all of the heirs being killed in the war and auctioned off in corrupt fashion) plantations for pennies on the dollar.

This only came to an end because of the Battle of Liberty Place when following a closely contested election, a militia of disenfranchised voters marched on New Orleans and overthrew the state government for 3 days. Though federal troops and NOPD managed to put down the insurrection, the cost in money and lives was deemed too expensive to continue, so Reconstruction ended and the veterans got their right to vote back.

Unfortunately, after 20 years of oppression, the newly repatriated whites returned that oppression 2 fold in the form of Jim Crow laws.

When you think about it, besides western Europe, the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Japan, aren't most countries in the world shitty?
