The Compromise of 1877 that followed the election of 1876 officially ended Reconstruction in the South.
Samuel Tilden; D won more electoral votes than R Hayes. There were a handful of states, mostly southern, where the electoral vote was contested. I can't remember all the states in dispute or the number of electorates in question. 20 maybe??
The Dems agreed to defer the votes to Hayes only if federal troops were removed from Southern states.
The plight of the Southern Negro wasn't so important to the Republicans when the Presidency was at stake.
