No doubt. I will give you that, for sure. Problem is, how are they going to know if the other person is armed or not before they send them? Ask? Trust they are telling the truth? No, the truth is they are going into every situation, unarmed, not knowing for sure if the person they are approaching is armed or not.

She may not yet(she just graduated a year ago), but there are social workers there that probably do. They deal with schizophrenics on a daily basis, including making house calls on some of them that live in deplorable conditions.

2) homeless individuals, i.e. people who are likely in a very bad place due to their current state. This could end fine, but it could very, very easily escalate into something terrible.
3) Addicts, people who are very likely to be very desperate.
4) Mental health. This one is more of a coin flip as mental issues can be so damn unpredictable.
I get we want police brutality to not be a thing, but if I'm making a 911 call in a situation where I'm dealing with the above and I can't handle it as is, most of the time I would want a responder to be someone who is trained in self-defense and armed. Not some social worker who could very well just make the situation worse.

I'm torn. Forget the stupidity of the mayor and the city for doing this. Is it really sad that an adult will be killed for willingly walking into a situation that common sense says should be handled by the police?

So the 911 operator is supposed to make a logical decision based on limited & often incomplete information?
So when 24 year old white girl gets killed it’s the 911 operators fault for sending her to the ghetto?
Or if it’s a bad part of town do they just send cops?

These things sound good in theory, but truth is, sending people to deal with unknown strangers is potentially very dangerous.
If you want to send unarmed social workers to deal with specific cases. Fine. But there still need to be some form of police backup presence. Either that or the social workers need to be able to carry a weapon themself. Cuz wtf is the social worker supposed to do if the person they are "talking down" gets violent. Ie pull out a gun, knife, or hell just start throwing fists.
People act like people with mental issues, drug addicts, etc can't get violent. Sometimes these can be some of the most dangerous people to deal with
