No shirts vs. skins

The practice of dividing boys' teams into shirts - who leave their shirts on - vs. skins - who remove their shirts - is "inappropriate."

"Not only does this suggest the large-sided games we are trying to avoid but the prospect of going shirtless is absolutely horrifying for those students who have low self esteem and poor body images."

I can't imagine shirts vs. skins is very prevalent in public school PE programs. Girls still participate in PE right?

Yeah some of the reasoning makes sense. Like actual physical participation is low in a lot of these games.

Like in kickball. The fat kids and the girls just go stand in the outfield. They are not being active 99.9% of the time.

But then some of the reasoning is just laughably stupid and overprotective.

It says that the original report/proposal has been removed from the ALSDE website. But if the excerpts that were quoted in this article are verbatim from the report, that is laughably pathetic.

quote:

"Participation time is at a bare minimum, the rules take forever to explain and even then, the students are confused. The game usually ends when two students crash heads together," the ALSDE said.

Am I really supposed to believe an unbiased educational professional wrote this? Sounds like an annoyed soccer mom griping to her friends.

I loved dodgeball. It was the one game where I, as a smallish child, could get my frustrations out by obliterating some fat bully.

I laughed at the part that said they banned Yoga in 1993 because of its promotion of Hinduism . Yeah Alabama's all about the separation of church and state when it's a foreign one.

ETA: This is ridiculous. Any opportunity for embarassment is taken out? I mean yeah, some kids just aren't good at sports. Instead of removing the opportunity to learn to be more physical or more athletic how about the teachers and parents teach the kids not to be shits to the kids who aren't All-Americans at kickball and dodge ball so they don't feel embarrassed if they whiff a kick or something. (And also the kids need to toughen up because the world is no picnic).

ETA2: That was hard to read. They want to take away any opportunity for the kids to improve on some of the physical issues they have because they weren't born to be able to do it naturally? Come on. You're going to have winners and losers. What they're missing is the point of playing these at a young level is not only to have fun, but to teach gracefulness, sportsmanship, and life lessons in both winning and losing.

This is the worst part of it. Without failure, you cannot grow. Are we gonna stop giving grades because the dumb kid in class is embarrassed when he fails a test?

Makes you wonder why the communists always shoot the teachers and judges first when they take over a country.

OK, dudes, I'm old. I played Red Rover in elementary school. A girl who was a thalidomide baby was in our class and she only had two stubs of fingers on one hand and three on the other.
Nobody aimed at her when playing Red Rover. We would just hold really hard onto her wrist. She understood and we understood. And the kids running over would NOT aim at whoever was holding 'hands' with her.

Her initials were MJB, and she was a nice kid.

You've never been to Louisiana I'm guessing. At least we both have Mississippi to look down on

Dodgeball should be a requirement.

The only game in school that teaches you a real life lesson. Situational awareness....life comes at you fast so you better keep your head on a swivel.

I’m sorry, but if a dead dumb and blind kid can become a pinball wizard than you can eat a bag of kawks

Good news, this turned it not to be an actual letter from the Alabama Dept. of Education.
