Now only if they'd enforce this, if it does become a law.
ETA: It's a law now!

A retired state trooper who is now a state lawmaker wants to put a limit on how long a driver can stay in the left lane on interstates without passing vehicles. Rep. Phillip Pettus, a Republican from Lauderdale County, said he believes his bill can improve traffic flow and help prevent incidents where anger about a slow left-lane driver boils over into violence. He has dubbed his bill the “Anti-Road Rage Act.”

“People just get so irritated with people holding up traffic in the left lane,” Pettus said. His bill would prohibit a driver from staying in the left lane on an interstate for more than a mile and a half without completely passing another vehicle.

Pettus said other states have similar laws and he borrowed heavily from a law in Texas. He said a mile and a half is the allowed distance because that’s about the distance tractor-trailers need to pass a slightly slower moving truck.

The Alabama House of Representatives today passed a bill that would prohibit drivers from staying in the leftmost lane on interstates for more than a mile-and-a-half without passing another vehicle.

It’s against the law. Is it not?
How many times have you ever seen someone get pulled over for it? I can’t say I ever have...

This would be impossible to enforce unless the cop is trailing you

In Illinois cops will randomly trail people in the left lane for this very purpose. My uncle who is a cop there told me this.

Yeah one that never gets enforced.

if my taxes built a road with two lanes then frick all the asshats who think laws restricting it to one lane are something that is good.
that said,
this sounds sensible even though it could never be enforced and would just be another excuse for cops to make merit less stops and unwarranted searches of vehicles for no reason

Just curious but how do you know what other people get pulled over for if you’re not there?

Seems there should be public record for some journalists type to see what is going on.
I just assume journalists are left lane drivers though.

As long as you have people like my family it will be a problem.
I argue with them all the time that no, going 5mph over the speed limit in a 70 zone doesn't mean you can stay in the left lane. It doesn't matter if you're going 100mph in the left lane and the guy coming up on you is going 110mph in a 70 zone. Get over.
Every holiday this comes up and every year I'm the only voice of reason.

I’m optimistic self-driving technology will revolutionize interstate travel much sooner than most imagine. It will be widely implemented in the trucking industry a lot sooner than personal automobiles.
Imagine a world where those trucks aren’t clogging the left lanes all over the country. That is just one positive impact. No need for mandatory driver rest times, more precise shipment schedules, and no trucks flipping because of meth fueled drivers are other positives.
Job loss will suck, but humans will still be needed for certain routes and delivery types.

Then stop driving slow in the fast lane and not carry illegal shite with you.

While I love the idea of this bill... This dude is a horrible Republican. This is the problem with our state: they all run as "Republicans" because that's the only way to win, but then they are all super "bigger government" once they are in.

I have a buddy who is a Trooper and lives on this shite. He tickets people for it all day because it pisses him off. Most people just act completely oblivious that they did anything wrong despite him watching them drive in the left lane for 3 miles with no intention to pass anybody.

The other night on the way home I was sitting at 115 in the left lane. It was easier than switching back and forth. Car speeds up behind me and I both signaled and got over well before he even needed to brake.
If only everyone watched their mirrors as diligently.

Sounds like a way to collect more tickets.
