re: AI companies are buying rare books, cutting the spine off to scan, then shredding them

When I read the beginning words, I assumed that they would just be copying nonfiction.
The fiction mills nowadays have a market, but is there a single writer who will be the next Charles Dickens or even produce the next Arthur Conon Doyle?
IF the machines scan all the mysteries written, how many story lines will be found? Which are better sellers in which countries? And then, translate it and sell it as new? Who would notice?

The scientific journals deserve protection because as bases of science, people will need to know what happened, when and why.
Look at the ongoing discussion of the first patient with AIDS and then the ones before him.

You don't need Clive Cussler or Dean Koontz writing when AI can spit out 50 Cussler clones in 10 minutes.



That's a nightmare world. Whatever you believe or not, there is a place and part of humanity in Cussler, Koontz and all the other paperback writers who can actually churn out human stories.

Same here. Depending on the book, I will also have an audio for the car, but 100% of the time I have a physical copy and most of them are hardback.

For the classics, fiction we’ve read with the kids when they were younger like Tolkien or Lewis, and history and economics I’ll always get a hardback copy.

My daughter starts AP government this year and the hardback federalist and anti federalist copies arrived a few days ago.
