There was an idea some time back to demolish the place and replace it with a new City Hall complex. Problem is, no one has any real idea what to do with even a renovated Auditorium. Parades now go to Convention Center Blvd. Saenger gets smaller shows. Mid South Wrestling is long gone. Minor League hockey really never caught on. It's really something of a White Elephant.

Happens a lot in government, you build buildings that you need today, but over time they are either replaced by something else or the need for them dries up. Meanwhile the government is still paying to keep the lights on and the vagrants out.

For example, Terrebonne Parish has several schools that are no longer needed, but they can’t just sell the property and the building in some cases because the land may have been donated or leased to the school system for a school.

What? It'll turn into Uzi's on Ice. Look what happened to Jazzland. NOLA cannot and will not have nice things for families to have fun. Matter of time when the golf place will shut down, because of the animals.

Needs to be repurposed as a modern auditorium. It seats 8,000 in an arena configuration. Larger than the Saenger and much smaller than the Smoothie King Center.

The only concert I attended was INXS and Public Image Ltd. (PIL) with Johnny Rotten - Great show.

UNO Lakefront Arena is perfect size. Saw Billy Strings there and it was great. Not too big, not too small.

It says the funding is from a bond and the $1m doesn't come from the general fund

I thought the general fund was empty?

At my old company we were contracted to conduct a full 3D laser scan of the building, inside and out. Interior data was captured using a Trimble SX12 scanning total station, while the exterior was mapped with a DJI Matrice 350 RTK equipped with LiDAR. The final datasets were delivered, but we never heard anything further from the client.

Two memories stand out.

Tulane graduation pre-Katrina was held here, had a great meal in the Quarters afterwards.

Temporary casino while they were building Harrah's.

Proactive by spending a MILLION DOLLARS to do planning

When you are going to spend 10s of millions of dollars to do something in the middle of your most vital area some planning might be a good idea.

Jethro Tull 1977, there was so much weed burning I thought the place was going to catch fire, could have used an aqua lung.

I randomly saw Widespread Panic at the Auditorium during Jazz Fest 2001. Wasn't really my scene but fun nonetheless.

The city waited way too long to fix the building, and now inflation has limited how far the allocated funding will go. And the local Treme residents now have it in their heads that they basically own the building and anything done with it must meet their approval. Just use your imagination in terms of what people in Treme want to do with that building. If they could beat the unscrupulous Latoya on her repurposing plan, they can probably beat any mayor.

Houston has spent just as long if not longer trying to figure out what to do with the Astrodome.

While a beautiful building at one time, it really no longer fills a need. The concerts etc that are too small for Smoothie King can go to Lakefront Arena.

It’s about the size and capacity of the Pensacola Bay Center which has hockey. I do think NOLA could still support minor league hockey but probably not downtown.

But they don’t. Not many concerts at Lakefront arena these days, I wish they would though

i graduated high school there. Also saw Zebra there, gambled there and watched hockey there. Was a grand building but the crime in that area of the city killed it.

I have fond memories of going to concerts at that place. Jethro Tull, Springsteen, Santana, Bob Welch, Rod Stewart (when he was still rock n' roll). Damn, I'm old...

And I'm probably older than you because I remember "Holiday on Ice", "Ice Capades", "Ringling Bros. Circus", pro boxing with local talent headlining the cards----Jerry Pelligrini, Percy Pugh, Joe Brown, Tony Licata

At Christmas they'd have "Toys for Tots" handing out toys to underprivileged kids.

It is a shame they've just let this building sit for so long, just like the old Charity Hospital downtown.
