I've had a side of a duplex I rent on Jackson Ave. I bought it after Katrina and I only rent to med school students. All but 1 renter live and practice in New Orleans and the one that moved away (to CA) comes back once a year and stays with her old roommate.

My sister is a travel nurse and just finished about 6 months at the LSU med complex. She had been to NOLA as a tourist many times but never lived here.

She stayed with me in Harahan, where I’ve never heard of a single instance of anything worse than speeding tickets, and commuted about 10 minutes to work.

I gave her a rundown of the worst murder infested areas in the city to stay away from, and the standard “be aware of your surroundings” speech. She did fine.

If you’re at LSU med, I’d use parking garages instead of street level parking.

I personally wouldn't live in the city nowadays. May not be as fun for a college student to live outside. You need to factor what is more important, entertainment or safety.

Live on campus if you can. I lived on campus for 3 years from 2015-2018. It's not the fanciest by an means but it is damn cheap and the safest you will be. Elevated walkways between all buildings so you never have to be on street level. The apartments were $450 per person for a two bedroom and that included all utilities and basic cable/wifi. Just a warning: there will be roaches. Landlord told me straight up to keep the apartment cleaner than your neighbors so they stay away. Will see a random one here and there no matter what though. Building was built in the 50s and has not been touched since. It was well worth it to me though. Saved on gas and felt safe the entire time I was there.

If you want to be in the city Lakeview or uptown (closer to Audubon the better) are your best bets. You’ll have a little commute but nothing too bad and you’ll be fine. Don’t let the people here scare you.

If you want to be in Jefferson parish check around Old Metairie, bucktown, even old Gretna. These are quiet and very safe areas. Old Metairie and Bucktown are similar commutes to med school as you’d have from Lakeview.

I’m moving there for med school as well and am going to live in a gated apartment in River Ridge. I know the commute might not be great but I want to feel like my car or anyone who visits me will be safe in a gated area. And most of the cars were gone in the middle of the day, which means most people there work.

I plan to stay at school most of the day and study there and then only go home later when traffic dies down

currently a prospective medical student and LSU New Orleans is on the table just bc I'm a Louisiana resident. Obviously been to Nola a ton, but never have lived there and from what I've read it doesn't seem like the best place to live. Is it as bad as some of the threads on here make it out to be? Better to live far away and commute? No better place to go for advice than the OT lounge I guess?

There are 2 Medical Schools, several colleges, several law schools, 3 Major hospital systems with residents.

You'll be fine sunshine.

There's a lot more to worry about living in the city than living out of it. For her last 2 years there I was dropping her off and picking her up from every rotation I could because of the lawlessness there. We were never comfortable. The situation there is very concerning. It is not a safe place to live or work and anywhere you are in the city, you're no more than 2 blocks away from a world of shite.

When was this?

Recently it's been a shite show, but we lived there from 2013-2017, and we were never really uncomfortable. My wife was in school at LSU HSC and often had study groups on campus at night with no issue. I also often parked at LSU HSC and walked to the Smoothie King Center for Pels games without a second thought.

I have friends who went to LSU NO and they as well as a fairly large group of LSU med students actually lived in Metairie Lake Apartments if that’s of any help.
Not the most visually appealing place, but the med school women walking around there certainly were.

Your general safety will be determined by your budget.

With festivals, football season, & Mardi Gras all back fully, some of the luster is coming back
