currently a prospective medical student and LSU New Orleans is on the table just bc I'm a Louisiana resident. Obviously been to Nola a ton, but never have lived there and from what I've read it doesn't seem like the best place to live. Is it as bad as some of the threads on here make it out to be? Better to live far away and commute? No better place to go for advice than the OT lounge I guess?

I graduated from there in 2016. Wife and I talked about moving back but decided against it based on how the city was going. A 4th year Tulane med student was almost murdered while I was there trying to stop a kidnapping (criminal’s gun jammed twice when he put it to the kid’s head, then shot him in the stomach). The problem is that Shreveport is also a crime infested shite hole, although it’s probably easier to avoid trouble than Nola (although the recent death of the 13 year old on Fairfield might imply otherwise). Our state is a near uninhabitable shite hole thanks to a small portion of our population and incompetent leadership.

I lived uptown, which has been dealing with plenty of carjackings/violence lately. I got my bike stolen and my roommate got his car broken into. Also had my mirror knocked off in a hit and run. Thankfully never saw personal violence. No place in Nola is 100% safe though but maybe consider living in River Ridge and commuting. Areas of mid city and uptown are way too close to ghetto trash who see you as a target.

No. Live on campus if you can. Students don't get killed walking to school, they have skyways at LSU new orleans. They do, however, get killed driving to school, because people here drive like fricking psychos especially in the morning.

Not sure why New Orleans gets such a bad rap. I get the crime, but that is every major city? Great night life and attractions

My wife graduated from Tulane School of Medicine in downtown New Orleans. We couldn't have been more excited to leave New Orleans and Louisiana at-large.

There's a lot more to worry about living in the city than living out of it. For her last 2 years there I was dropping her off and picking her up from every rotation I could because of the lawlessness there. We were never comfortable. The situation there is very concerning. It is not a safe place to live or work and anywhere you are in the city, you're no more than 2 blocks away from a world of shite.

It's not great, but not as bad as some here make it out to be.

If your plan is just school then home to study; live in a suburb. Way cheaper and safer. If you are going to have any social life you will be hanging out in NOLA anyway so the problems that come with NOLA will be unavoidable.

Stay out of the FQ. Stay out of Marigny/Bywater after midnight. Don't leave your car running and walk away. Live within the teapot.

New Orleans is WAY past the "every major city has crime" argument. 10 years ago I'd agree with you but it's insane right now.

Live on Kevlar Blvd., buy an APC, and only take online courses. If you are seriously considering moving to N.O., you are not smart enough for med school anyway.
