The police around my area are very fast. They only work this area, and there isn't much crime at all. I called about a month ago about some dude who was taking pictures of my truck at 2am, and they were here within a minute if me hanging up with the operator.
Go back and read your original post and then read mine. Yours was incorrect

I bit the bullet and bought a four camera/300 GB DVR system 5 years ago for around $300.. I manage it myself and don't have the monthly payments it's basically the same tech without the aesthetics.

Your insurance almost always will cover the cost via a monthly kickback. Check and see.

1. Asks if you have alarm.
2. You say no.
3. You see where this is going, right?

Do the cameras call the police? Fire Dept? EMS?
And your 5 year old system is junk by today's cheap Chinese standards.

Site-Safe...locally owned. Highly recommend.

Have the system, installation was free with free equipment up to a "certain amount". They'll recommend you buy about 1200.00 more of their equipment. They'll also throw in some charges on each window alarm, usually at 20 dollars a pop. This is in case the window is shattered instead of lifted up on entry. They'll also charge you more on your monthly fee if you don't have a landline. We use them, but they're sneaky how they try to get your money. You need to make them explain every detail and cost beforehand, this way they won't blow your mind at the end and leave you with a sour taste and extra charges.

They came in and installed a system at work today but unfortunately they installed these cameras. The boss says they are only actived during an alarm but know he's creeping all day.

Do you currently have an alarm system, or are they doing an install from scratch?
It's probably a 3 year contract, so over the life of the contract you are paying $2,160. What kind of recording service are they offering with the cameras? Depending on how many sensors you are getting, I estimated they equipment cost to be about $1,000. If you can get monitoring service for under $30 per month, then you can do it cheaper yourself.
When I moved into my house there was a cheap ADT system in place that I replaced with a Honeywell system. I added a module that connects it to the internet. I get email & txt notifications for free.

Precisely the opposite. They'll give you all the shite for free but try to lock you in a 3-5 year contract.
They're basically the old cell phone model.

JPSO-Might be the best metro area LEO in the state. Will be interesting to see if the Harry Lee crew retiring over the years and spineless politicians lessen their effectiveness

1) I have a pistol, many of them
2) You don't have to get "certified" to own a pistol
3) I'm not worried about protecting my home while I'm there... Only when I'm gone. A pistol won't help me when I'm gone
Thanks everyone else for your comments

It's more like 5 seconds with our system. They don't effing play.
We use DFW Security via alarm.com. LOVE it. Cameras, locks, lights--all that crap. Very pleased.

Alarm dot com as been a game changer in the industry. You pay a little more for the backend service but it's the best.
Skybell just came out with an alarm dot com compatible doorbell. Since you already have the video package you might want to ask your dealer about it.

Appreciate the heads up, Wise. We have that tied into Nest.
Or at least Mrs. Crickets does. I don't know how to deal with all of this crap.

Just for the front doorbell thing. It's tied in to Nest (I think?).
How are the Nest cameras that are use inside of the home?

Know what the "monitoring does"? It means they give you a call 10 minutes after an alarm and ask if the police need to be called. Pretty worthless.
Maybe for a shitty monitoring company. I use Custom Security. They call me immediately.
