Acadia Parish to move to 4 day school week
Posted by BayouBengal23

Interesting. Wonder how this will work out?

Students and educators of Acadia Parish can expect a four-day work week in the Fall.
The Acadia Parish School Board held a special meeting Thursday night, casting their votes in favor of Monday being a non-instructional day.
Scott Richard, Superintendent of Acadia Parish School Board said this decision has been a topic of discussion since late, September and burnout is one reason why the decision has been made.

"The goal is not to reduce instructional time," Richard said. "Obviously, no one wants to cut instructional time. The goal would be to compress a normal, five-day work week or instructional day into four, extended days."

Not well until jobs go 4 days a week

Probably just add 2 hours to the school day Tuesday-Friday.

Should just make it a 0 day school week and send them straight to the crawfish ponds

How about instead break into quarter or trimester system and don't have a 3 month long summer break that disrupts building of learning and family patterns?
This is idiotic, kids are already behind

Part of the parish has been 4 day week for 20 years and its worked out just fine
But the big stink is that the schools and the parents wanted the day off on Friday which has been how it was for those who had 4 day weeks but the school board voted the day off on Monday

I wonder what model they looked at. Obviously the adults want the 4day work week, kids be damned.

They looked at the model that was already working in part of the parish that had the highest test scores

And I'm sure the schedule has way more to do with those scores than the demographics.

Which is dumb because the length of instruction today is already too long. Why do we make 1st graders sit through class for 8 hours a day but college students sit through at most 4 hours a day?

Did they mention why?
I would think there is a much larger portion of the population who has some sort of modified schedule on Friday rather than Monday (shortened day, no work on Friday, etc...).
I guess they don't really care about parental work schedules if they are going to a 4 day week anyway, as the vast majority of people work M-F.

My elementary aged kids are pretty well spent after a regular day. Factor in extracurricular activities and both parents working. It's a struggle getting studying, reading time and homework done in a 5 day week. Not sure where that time comes from if you tack on 2 more hours of class time.

Because they are dumb - no good reason was given
And you are right - more people have Friday off than Monday and when you take vacation you are more likely going to take of Friday than Monday

They picked Monday? I guess they figured many would still need to work on Fridays in the Fall due to football.

A couple of schools did this in SWLA post covid and hurricanes.
It worked great, and my son thrived in it. They moved to make it permanent, but the soccer moms screamed from the roof tops that it upset their workout routine and mimosas. I wish we still had it

Born and raised in this town. Big mistake to do this. Teen pregnancy is already a big problem. It's going to be a bigger problem. I understand towns like midland and Esterwood has been doing this for years. Towns like Rayne and Crowley will suffer. Our town doesn't have any OB services. It's already a big problem and now for them to vote yes on this is selfish and makes absolutely no sense.
