1) Get a training e-collar. Educate yourself on how to use it first.
2) Crate train
3) Establish if it’ll have furniture privileges now
4) Walk and exercise it daily. Seriously.
5) Don’t let it sleep in bed with you.
6) Don’t set the dog up for failure then fuss at it when it fails. (Example: leave your shoes out then bitch at it when it chews on them. You failed, not the dog.)

Consistency, consistency, consistency. It’s MUCH easier to teach a dog “always” and “never” than it is “sometimes” and “maybe.” Make sure everyone who is living with the dog is on the same page with rules and training.

Be patient and stay calm, there will be times you will want to lose your shite, but don’t.

Your GF is extremely smart and proves it by getting what is considered one of the best breed of dog around. We had one for 14 yrs and was absolutely the best pet/friend we ever had. If it bonds with you you might forget your GF. The only downside is that they are so affectionate they do tend to suffer from separation anxiety. If you leave them alone all day be ready for go crazy welcome home/where you been/you know I been here all day by myself/ I'm ready to go out and play.
Take care of it and it will provide you many years of enjoyment...

The GF is getting a dog on Monday. This'll be my first one. Unfortunately we didn't get to have one growing up so I've never really raised one from a puppy. Anything I should know or expect? I'm excited and can't wait to bring her home.

It's a King Charles Cavalier if that matters at all.

Obviously no play time with pitbulls

ETA: I'm about to load up on treats/food/toys for it to have at the apartment and was also wondering if it really matters what I get or anything to potentially stay away from.

Order this book and you will do great in training and handling your pup appropriately.

The other Monks of New Skete is probably just as good, but this one helped me a ton with my first dog (a German Shepherd).

If you establish dominance, they only want to please you. Nothing they do (chewing, whining, soiling) is on purpose.

Important to remember that, because they can test your patience.

Also make sure YOU are the only one feeding them while training, NO ONE else.

Full of Indians.

But like open it is relative to the rest of the area. It is honestly a good spot.

Here's a direct quote from the AKC:

quote:

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an active, graceful, well-balanced toy spaniel, very gay and free in action; fearless and sporting in character, yet at the same time gentle and affectionate. It is this typical gay temperament, combined with true elegance and royal appearance which are of paramount importance in the breed.

Congrats!

Don't listen to these squares that say it can't sleep in the bed with you or get hype when you come home. Ours sleeps spread eagle at our feet and when we get home the damn thing gets so excited that it smiles and snorts. Best part of my day is coming home to that.

Animals in bed is disgusting, and the hype encourages jumping up on guests entering a home which is trashy

D not allow nipping or mouthing unless it's a toy or if your not to good with dogs you will have the problem forever. Sign up for puppy school, and the more time you dedicate to your dog up to 6-8months old the better he will be. After thatvhe is trained or should be just need to maintain

Letting them lick you in the mouth is not normal, no matter what LSU Coyote tells you.

My husband and I have narrowed down our search and have decided on this breed as well. I'm suffering from sticker shock$$$. With all their health issues, definitely a dog you want to get from a reputable breeder. If you don't mind me asking, how much are you paying?

Don’t be a shitty dog owner like that dumbass Gaytor fan that got the family cat killed and you should be okay.

Give it lots of toys that way it chews on those and not your stuff. Also, if you see it making a mistake, correct it by giving the dog another option instead of whipping it.

always give the dog praise, and try not to spank the dog when it messes up.

Puppy Training... then
Beginner Training... then
Advanced Training.

A good dog is welcomed everywhere. A bad dog is a pain in the arse. You only get one shot. Start very early.
