We have one of these. Great dog. Doesn’t bark at all unless somethings wrong outside. CHASES squirrels like he has a death feud with them. Will never catch said squirrel…ever. Loves to just veg out so if you’re on the couch they are usually right next to you. Great with people, kids, BUT if the door is open they may attempt a jail break at any second so heads up on that. Use their eyes to work you for food. Be careful can get overweight because of sad eyes

Nope. Parents didn't want the hassle and I didn't want to raise my first dog by myself in college.

Dogs go apeshite when their humans come home. Do not acknowledge them at first. stand there camly. The dog will make its way to your feet. Then tell it hello
dog will probably go bonkers again, do not pet, stand there...eventually the dog will go to your feet and sit calmly...then pet it. each time it goes bonkers you withdraw affection.
If it jumps up, place hand over head to prevent it from jump and say "down".... if it still jumps, withdraw affection
Be prepared for the chewing phase! Do not leave anything you consider valuable laying around. Provide appropriate chew toys

Be sure to tell your friends with babies that you now know what they are going through since becoming a dog dad.

Don't buy into the "positive reinforcement only" training mantra that you read everywhere. Don't be afraid of getting physical with your dog. Don't beat or smack the dog unless they do something that must be avoided at all costs, like snapping or growling at a child. But ear pinches, grabbing by the scruff, and pinning the dog by the neck are useful training tools that puppies would normally experience from their mother.
Treats are a great motivator, but don't get reliant on using them for obedience.
Exercise your dog. A tired pup is a happy pup.
eta: These are also great books that give a well rounded view on training. Let Dogs Be Dogs

Oh and patience, patience, patience. I love my dogs but they still drive me nuts. Give him a fair amount of time outside- walking, playing, whatever. he’ll need activity everyday to keep from becoming an obnoxious PIA to you.

Gotcha. Enjoy it... humans don't deserve dogs

Don’t leave anything out you don’t want it to chew
Have patience
Get Nylabone chews for puppies / aggressive chewers
Try to stay away from treats made in China
Don’t over feed it

quote:This. And be sure to not put the dog in the crate when it’s in trouble. Crate should be considered a safe space to rest. Also...when crate training be sure to get a crate that only allows enough room for the dog to curl up in and bring the dog outside frequently to potty train. If the crate is too large, the puppy will go to a corner of it to use the bathroom.

it's easier for it to learn than it is to unlearn
don't encourage behavior at one time that you might not want it to do at others. example: let the dog jump up to greet you and then expect it not to jump up to greet other folks or jump up to greet you when you're wearing nice clothing.

What kind of freak would do something like that? Next thing you'll tell me is that type of person would post said picture on an internet message board.
