New policy allows American Airlines to downgrade first-class tickets to coach — and keep most of your money
NY Post
Air travelers are sure to fly off the handle when they hear this.
American Airlines has quietly instituted a new policy that would allow it to downgrade first-class passengers to economy — but keep the money passengers paid for premium seats, according to a new report by View From The Wing.
First-class tickets are a hard sell in this economy, but even those with the good fortune to afford the best seats are frequently getting the shaft on American.
First class passengers on American Airlines who are automatically downgraded to economy seats — due to aircraft changes or broken seats — now stand to lose 60% of the difference paid between airfares. USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect
More than other airlines, wrote travel expert Gary Leff, American has become synonymous with poor quality as a plague of broken seats and aircraft swaps has seen frustrated passengers moved from first-class to economy without their consent.
Whereas other airlines might offer compensation for such an inconvenience, American is taking the opposite approach with a policy change that promises only “40% of the ticketed fare on the affected segment.”
In some cases, this could translate to receiving less than half of the difference paid between first class and economy.
This means a downgrade from a $1,050 first class ticket to a $200 coach ticket would result in a $420 refund, rather than the $850 different between the two airfares.

They might as well send a message to all of their 1st class passengers telling them frick you, fly at your own risk.

Did they do it "quietly" because it's illegal? Because that definitely sounds illegal.

American is a slight step above Spirit

so who’s getting the first class ticket I paid for in this scenario?

Sounds like if demand were to go up, they could charge more for first class and downgrade the customers who bought for cheaper

Flying first class for any flight under 3 or 4 hrs is a waste of money anyway.

I’m not sure how this won’t end up in some type of litigation on the consumer protection side..

There really isn’t a good airline especially when it comes to flying on a narrow body. Delta is better but their 737s are budget planes with delta badging. I don’t really get the industry. It’s vital to the country yet airlines are always having revenue issues and they always frick the consumer.

I fly American a decent amount because they offer the best options when booking from my airport, but consistently have problems nearly every time I fly with them. Late flights, cancelled flights, changes from direct flights to one's adding stops.
I am ready to stop using them all together.
Flew Allegient last week and surprisingly wasn't bad and things went smoothly.

I always enjoy flying delta. Never had a problem. May get an old plane here n there but that type of stuff doesn’t bother me. I flew on one of their new airbus’ to Canada recently. Super nice.
I do agree with what you’re saying though about the industry in general.

I know people who will defend this saying they need the money. I see it with cruise lines all the time.

I picked a hell of a year to hit Platinum with American.
