Happens to me on United all the time when they change to planes w/o first class on the IAH-BTR leg of trips. They don't give any refunds because the put me in a "Travel Options Bundle" which they say has the same value.

Did they do it "quietly" because it's illegal? Because that definitely sounds illegal.
Many companies have adopted a policy of asking for forgiveness, rather than permission. Depending on the situation it could be several years before they will be forced to refund customers or even cease to perform the illegal activity. I've heard this message straight out of my CEO's and COO's mouth on several occasions.

I hate AA and think they're easily the worst big carrier.
But my guess would still be that this is some flexible, pro-company policy that an industry observer has parsed could lead to this result, whether or not AA really intended to engage in this practice.

The more I hear stories like this, the more I realize that capitalism requires a moral, virtuous society that values humans over money.

The reality is that all systems - liberalism, capitalism, socialism - are highly dependent on the character of the people within them to function well.
Some are probably more elastic in that regard than others - for example, capitalism instead of socialism - because they can sustain more abuse by participants before the outcomes are egregious.
