Ya see, wat had happened wuz dat deys wuz jus so excited dat dare yungest just got her erly acceptance to Harvard ware she be joinin her udder ttree siblins to studies Afrikan Amuricun studies at Harvard beginning next year, so deys just forgots to pay da po' measly tree hundred dolla bill. Dats chump change ta deze playas.

Doesn't look like they are new to this. They executed their plan with extreme precision, even the babies knew what to do.

The first restaurant to do this will actually get hell for it, but they need to take a credit card to start a tab just like a bar does. They can break the payment up any kind of way when you're ready to check out, but if you leave charge the card plus a 20% gratuity

You know what, though? I can see restaurants in "urban" areas adopting a, "We need a major credit card for a deposit of approximately $X per person. Sorry, that's corporate policy."
Yes you'll also have to deal with the "fraudulent", but they could do that now. At least this way you can combine your security video with the deposit card run and tell the bank they're customer is full of shite. And, you'd have the money up front.

I think this is reasonable. You could do it for parties >4 or 6, and as long as you do it to everyone, there shouldn’t be an issue. Don’t have a credit card? Don’t eat there.

It’s the logical progression, it’s like hotels running your card for incidentals when you check in.
