I'm beginning to get really disgusted with America. The country I grew up in just fell apart and died.

And they probably paid thousands to fly and shite in a bag. Between stories like this, and cancelled/delayed flights, we’re driving from LA to PA over Thanksgiving. I’ve been pricing flights for months, and for 4 of us to fly, and deal with luggage, airports, delays, rental cars, etc, it’s just not worth it. I’d rather be in control of our route and stops than be at the mercy of the airlines, especially on such a busy travel holiday week.

There has to be a better way to handle this, but in regards to a lot of the comments, tarmac delays are nothing new. A few from 2012:

Shuttle America (United) flight 3512 from Chicago O’Hare to Atlanta, 7/13/12 – delayed on tarmac 257 minutes

ExpressJet Airlines (United) flight 6180 from Rapid City, S.D. to Chicago O’Hare, 7/13/12 – delayed on tarmac 249 minutes

ExpressJet Airlines (United) flight 5918 from Richmond, Va. to
Chicago O’Hare, 7/13/12 – delayed on tarmac 242 minutes

SkyWest Airlines (American) flight 5211 from Cleveland to Chicago O’Hare, 7/13/12 – delayed on tarmac 221 minutes

ExpressJet Airlines (United) flight 5875 from Harrisburg, Pa. to Chicago O’Hare, 7/13/12 – delayed on tarmac 219 minutes

Caribbean Airlines flight 526 from Georgetown, Guyana to New York JFK, 7/7/12 – delayed on tarmac 243 minutes

CNN article from 2010:

quote:

In June 2010, there were three such strandings, compared with 268 tarmac delays of more than three hours last June. In April and May, there were four and five lengthy delays, respectively, compared with 74 in April 2009 and 34 in May 2009.

True to form, we spend less than 40m on the ground, everyone drinking beer. He told the FAs to secure the carts, and he was "going to drive it like he stole it" in order to make the landing window in ATL. We rolled off the curtain/taxiway onto the runway without stopping and hit it. That's a Captain.

That had to be a fun flight. No nonsense and probably straight up like a rocket.

Side note, this must have been a while back. I don’t think any us airlines are still running passenger service on MD-80s except for maybe USAJet…? I’m curious now. Question for the OT pilots I guess!

Delta still operates the Boeing 717 which is pretty much just an MD-80 with Boeing written on the side.

USA Jet, Everts Air cargo in Alaska still operate the MD-80. I also think there are still a few in use doing firefighting out west.

USAJet only operates freighter converted MD-80 series. Western Atlantic is the only current MD-80 passenger operator based in the U.S. that I'm aware. The operate on-demand and scheduled charter, mostly out of MIA and MFE.

I’m going to guess there is more to this story than all that’s being told. It’s rare that something like this happens on the international side of the business, although one could argue that the Caribbean flights are quasi-international due to their stage length, but you still need to clear customs. Domestically, the airlines were (and still may be) hyper-sensitive to the tarmac delay rule LINK and when I was flying domestically we would start receiving messages increasing in frequency on how to “recover” the flight when the time limits approached. The penalty for going over the limit is substantial, I believe $27,500 for each passenger.

A quick look at Delta’s schedule from Nassau (the article just said “the Bahamas” so fair assumption) to ATL shows 2 flights a day; one a 757 and the other a 737-900, both of which hold close to 200 people. Do the math.
Not every airport is capable of handling every airplane in a fleet and when weather gets bad- and it could have been bad for multiple airports in a large area, the airports that are used as alternates get fewer and fewer and multiple diverts can overwhelm them.
Not defending the airlines - the bean counters cut to the bone during COVID and they lost a lot of seasoned and talented people in every division (perhaps dispatch let them down here) so a lot of what is happening is self-induced, but it’s rarely as simple as some of these news articles make it seem.

Stories like this are why I opted to drive nine & a half hours to Peoria this week instead of flying. I flew up here in June and the experience, while not as bad as this story, was horrible enough to make me realize the air transportation system in this country has ceased to function. Flying has become torture.

Cut me some slack. I just woke up and I’m drinking my morning coffee at the hotel before I hit the road for the 9.5 hour drive home.

No way I'm flying for a less than 4 hour drive. You would be half way there before the plane left

Left the plane sitting for hours because customs had to process the passengers. Meanwhile the boarder is wide open. If an American wants to go on vacation we cannot trust you to sit inside an airport you must stay on the plane and crap your pants.

That’s what happened to me in June. On the way up I flew Bham-Chicago-Peoria. On the way back I flew Peoria-Charlotte-Bham. Almost every step of the way there were delays and sitting on tarmacs. The shortest delay was 20 minutes, the longest an hour. One was 45 min with no air and the plane got so hot two kids overheated and were throwing up while their moms were raising hell that their kids were not well and needed off the plane. Added up for the whole trip, I think I spent somewhere between 3 & 4 hours sitting on planes just waiting on ground crew to direct us to a terminal. On top of that I lost another hour and a half sitting in the terminal after the engines overheated when they started them up on the flight out of Peoria. At least when that happened they let us off the flight to go back and sit in the terminal. Still, when you add up all the delays there and back, it was over five hours, maybe close to six.

My issue is the delays are getting damn close to making me miss connections. So if that happens and I am not on the next flight (I have heard horror stories from other passengers) then I am about to be driving that honda all over the country.
