I'm about to buy a stock of air filters online as it's a pain to remember to buy them at the store and swap out as needed, plus it seems cheaper to buy in bulk. Got 6 freakin returns to keep up with.

The quality range of air filters seems to be massive.

You can get a 6-pack for $25, and some go individually for $20 a pop.

Is this one of those items like TP where it's worth it to cough up the bread for higher quality, or if you're changing them frequently enough is it smarter just to get quantity over 'quality' in terms of value? I mean...it just catches crap in the air. And clogs up once it catches alot. Can't imagine there is a $15/ea performance difference. But I ate alot of glue as a child so my opinion ain't worth much.

TLDR: Cheap or expensive air filters for your house AC return?

I buy mine at Costco and change the 1 in my house monthly. That's all I got.

mid range seems to be the way to go..I've heard that the thicker ones can actually cause issues due to strain

don't go cheap. don;t go expensive. Buy you a pack of 3M's that are middle of the road and you'll be fine

just buy permanent reusable filters for them, vacuum and rinse with hose then reinstall.

if you find that too much work for one day get 2 sets and vacuum and wash them out later at your convenience

Don't buy the expensive ones. It's like putting a piece of plywood in your air return.

the cheaper ones are best, just change them more frequently. the super expensive ones can be restrictive to proper air flow

You can buy the washable filters that can be hosed out and blown out to dry them off and reuse them. Lots of commercial building have them for their systems and you can get them in any size. My wife's office is brand new and they just ordered a 16 x 36 for $50 and a 24 x 36 for $64, but they will be good for years.

That's because they're still the best option. The new style is a joke price wise and they're not good for your system. It's designed to suck in air from your house, cool it and pump it back in. The $30 filters restrict the air flow putting unnecessary strain on the unit and dropping the pressure. The lower the psi in the line the less efficient and harder everything has to work. It's one of the biggest gimmicks of my lifetime. Use the old school filters and change them once a month.

literally the perfect item for an amazon subscription. Once a month, when they show up at your door, you change them out. Never forget.

I had a washable one and it would cause my heat exchanger to over heat due to restrictive airflow

No, they're not. You should use a pleated filter and change once a month. The blue ones are worthless.
