No, a DUI doesn't "ruin your life". In fact, the consequences aren't harsh enough.

So tired of this bullshite. A 20 year old isn't a kid. He's a man. Funny, people in their 20s want the right to vote, serve in the military, drink alcohol, buy/sell real estate, get married, etc, but then when they frick up, suddenly they're "just a kid".

You frick my car up, I'm getting a police report and insurance WILL be involved. Nothing against the man that hit me but I pay insurance for a reason.

frick that I'm calling the cops and I'm going to try my best to keep from whipping your drunk arse while we wait for the fuzz

Drunk drivers deserve an arse whipping

Yes.

Of course, and I'd have given her the highest estimate to have the repairs done and insisted on a check made out to me.

Gotten the repairs done at the cheaper one, and had some fun with the rest.

Win-Win

I like that he called his Mom.

The only thing I was calling my Mom for at 20 was bail.

Frick all of motherfrickers who are soft on drunk drivers. He won't won't be able to "incredibly apologize" his way out when he ruins someone's life or takes it from them.
My first boss was killed by a carload of drunk teens, leaving behind a wife and 3 kids.
My neighbor's teenage daughter was hit by a drunk driver and suffered severe brain damage. She will never come close to full recovery and her familly's lives are destroyed forever. The death penalty isn't kind enough for drunk drivers.

It'll take a DUI before he gets the lesson.

Hope you friend can sleep easy and he doesn't kill anyone before then.

Word to the wise.....having the cops involved is NO guarantee you will be re-imbursed for damages. GF recently had a 20 something Liv. parish punk run his truck thru her front yard, demolishing her $300 subdiv. code mailbox, rolling over a stop sign and and plastering a large concrete lion, trying to "escape", he buried his truck up to the axles, creating deep ruts. Neighbors heard the impacts, cops appeared...State police and several Liv. parish sheriffs. Told her not to worry, the kid is covered insurance wise and will be charged w/ DWI, criminal damage to property etc.
Pick up the police report...$20 !!!!, turns out he has NO insurance, driving on a 3 x suspended license ! They even let his buddy drag his truck back to the road...so, it dosen't have to be towed ! No help from authorities and NO answers how they could have f$%^*) this up !
The punk dosen't have anything and won't pay anything either !

That's pretty dramatic. I know plenty of people who got DUIS and went on to grow up into fine adults. In most cases it was for the best.

Aren't the cops required to be called if you plan on making a claim on an accident?

Seems like the old switchin info thing is something of the past

If your friend tries to file an insurance claim against them, they claim responsibility, and no police report is filed, couldn't they be charged with a hit and run?

Wow, a lot of misinformation in this thread. I've been in quite a few wrecks, and only one of them involved the police. Insurance took care of them all. They will determine who is at fault. In one of them, the determined both drivers were at fault (both of us broke the law). FWIW I would have done exactly what you're friend did.

A DWI doesn't ruin your life like people say. I know multiple people in Law School, Pharmacy school, Nursing school, work at the plant, work construction, that have all gotten DWI's. It's a pain in the arse to go to AA classes or explain to the boards why you did it, but it doesn't ruin your life.

I would never drink and drive though too easy to find a ride these days with uber

Sounds like you aren't a very good driver, so it's not surprising you'd make a poor decision here as well.

If the kid was respectful about it than I would have done it. I wrecked a vehicle before I had a drivers license. Completely my fault. The guy didn't flop around on the ground calling for an ambulance and shite and easily could have.

Pay it forward. We've all done dumb shite. I learned my lesson without getting drug though court/lawsuits/etc.

My mom threatened to kill me on the side of airline highway and left me there with the state trooper. That did it.

Is your friend going to lie about the accident to the insurance company? The claims processor is going to wonder why you have a few thousand in damages with no police report.
