Damage is a few thousand dollars. He wants my friend to call his parents instead of cops so he doesn't get arrested. She calls the mother who is a university professor in northern La and is eager to help settle this without involving the police. My friend gets all of the insurance info from the mother and agrees to work it out with her instead of calling cops.
Would you have done the same thing?

If I did, I would have asked my friend not to share my story on TigerDroppings.

He'd learn a lesson by getting his life ruined though. If he was a nice kid who made a mistake and was incredibly apologetic I would for sure look for other solutions than cops.

There is no good result here, but at least his mother knows and if she seemed incredibly pissed then I'd believe he'd get a lesson learned at home.

Yup and I've done the same thing before. As long as they get you the insurance stuff no need to ruin a young baws life before it really even gets started.

Good move

The biggest issue is making sure their insurance is legit and they won't fight it after the fact. Without a police report, that can be hard to do.

Hell no.

What proof does your friend have if they fight it?

I've been there and thankfully it worked out and the drunk kid's parents didn't screw me over. I sent them the bill for the damage and it was paid in full.

I'd say it probably depends..

If he was out of his mind drunk and driving and hit the car and fled I would 100% call the cops.

If he was just buzzed and hit the car because he was doing something stupid like texting and has been respectful, left a note or owned up to hitting the car, and has been more than willing to pay whatever the cost I probably wouldn't.

Really just depends on how mature the driver acted toward me about it.

Honestly, you should probably call the cops no matter what but the above is what I'd most likely do.

Aren't the cops required to be called if you plan on making a claim on an accident?

Seems like the old switchin info thing is something of the past

Depends on how bad the damage is to the car. If i can drive the car away, i wouldnt call cops. If my car is too damaged to drive, im calling cops.

Hell no. Get a police report. They can always deny it if you dont get a police report. That shite happened to me. Me and another driver both bumped into each other at the same time. We exchanged insurance info and said there was no need to call the cops cause there was no damage. A few days later my insurance company called me and said someone is filing an injury claim against me. Trust me, call the police and get a report.

did the same thing circa 06-07.

Girl pulled out of french quarter daiquiri's and bumped me about 930pm after i left my night class. her and her friend get out acting like it was my fault clearly drunk. I told them to calm down, got her insurance and phone number and went got it take care of. phone number came in handy some time later too.

Unless that's a fairly new law, no. But it's been a few years (around 4) since I've experienced that situation.
