Appears to have been caused by a combination of fog and icy roads.

quote:

YORK Co., Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police responded to a “63 vehicle chain-reaction accident” with 35 reported injuries Sunday morning.

According to emergency communications, they received a call at 7:49 a.m. for a crash on I-64 westbound near the Queens Creek Bridge.

Peter Glagola with Riverside Regional Medical Center tweeted that they were treating 35 patients from the wreck.

Glagola stated that:

One person has serious injuries
Five patients have moderate injuries
Nineteen patients have minor injuries

Virginia State Police tells us that the current number involved in the accident is at least 63, with a total of 35 individuals transported. 25 state units are currently assisting with the incident.

How wide is I64 there?

My thoughts on the driver of car 63 and several in front of him or her depend on that answer.

I’m not sure, but it sounds like that stretch is undergoing construction (perhaps widening?).

Yeah, looks like there was nowhere to go. With the fog, people just kept piling in.

I see it too often. People driving too fast for the ice and visibility conditions. Often it may be just over a rise or around a curve in the highway and people are going too fast for slick conditions.

I-64 comes up one car short of a great nickname.

This looks like something I did with Hotwheels.

Yeah, too much speed, and even if car 54 saw it and was able to stop, car 55 or 56 came along and dickered his good fortune.

I bet someone going slow in the passing lane caused it.

Great news. Although they still missed 64 cars on I-64 they have now settled on 69.
Officers on the scene say it’s unlikely the count will rise to 350.

These huge pileups are almost always fog. Someone should figure out a way to eliminate fog in small areas.
