re: 60+ sick in Idaho after drinking raw milk

I grew up with people who had a few dairy cattle (my nannan and parrain, who lived a few hundred yards from me). Yes, we occasionally drank raw milk right after it was milked (by hand, mind you, Parrain tried to squirt some in my mouth once and laughed, I miss that man), but they typically boiled their milk if they were going to refrigerate and store it, as was common practice, because older folks were not idiots.
Before refrigeration, milk was not typically drunk other than shortly after a cow was milked. Milk was processed into other items like butter, buttermilk, cottage cheese, cheeses, yogurt, and other more stabilized forms less prone to rapid spoilage.

shite there was time as kids we’d squirt from the teat to another cousins mouth. Not a lot but it was sweet (flavored). Now I can’t even stand warmish milk.

People never stop these days to consider why all the above came about over time.
"Nah, I'm just gonna guzzle that moo juice that's been sitting around for a few days. I know pawpaw never did, but pawpaw just didn't understand the health benefits of teh raw milkz!"

I worked in a dairy during high school and I think everyone that has the urge to drink raw milk, needs to work in a dairy for just one day….

Really depends on the quality of the farm, in an old stanchion barn that I worked at in high school where a cow could kick the milker off directly into the gutter, absolutely not. At an old school small dairy farm with <50 head and the farmer and hands have given names to each of the cows, absolutely I would. Buttermilk content and somatic cell count of the raw milk would be night and day between those two farms.

Holy shite

People eat raw oysters all the time and that’s technically riskier.
Exactly. About 15 people per year die from eating raw oysters. Compared to zero for raw milk. Slap a warning label on it like we do everything else and be done with it.
Glad it's finally legal in Louisiana.

Yeah I'm not sure exactly how protected they are, but I know of multiple dairies in LA that sell raw milk in grocery stores and slap a "not for human consumption" sticker on it.
That's how it finally got passed. Essentially falls under "pet milk" to avoid liability. And even then it's still only direct from farm sales. This pet milk angle is a good one. It's how it's been legal in Georgia and Flor for decades. Keeps everybody in their own lanes, so to speak.

I used to squirt it straight in my mouth from the udder when milking our milk cow. Could have been me too.
RIP Suzie.

would also think, despite the label, if someone gets sick and can prove you knew people were really drinking it, an attorney could make your life hell
If it was sold in the milk section, I agree.
If it’s next to the dog and cat food in a cooler, eh, I mean people are stupid

Idk about LA but here in FL it says on the label for animal consumption only. They don’t sell it in stores but local farms will deliver it to you and to people at farmers markets. So I’m guessing that’s how they get around it?
That's what the law says here too. "Not for human consumption".

As a kid I drank milk from a cow that had been milked 45 minutes before and it was still warm. 71 years later I'm still here.

Why drink raw milk? It tastes awesome. Store bought milk tastes like water in comparison. Grew up on a large dairy farm. I also never had a problem consuming milk, now store bought milk gives me the shits.
