Hell, the fact our night side is lit up like a Christmas tree with visible light is enough to tag us as interesting.

We can already study and make decent estimates of other planets atmosphere and surface from light years away based to spectrographic data and shite.

The first commercial radio broadcast was 105 years ago. The closest star system to Earth, Alpha Centauri, is about 4.25 light years away. Putting aside the fact that radio transmissions from Earth would be nearly impossible to distinguish from background noise at that distance, lets think about the math here.

If someone in the Alpha Centauri system received our very first commercial radio broadcast and sent a probe out immediately, that probe would have had to travel at 4.2% of the speed of light (c) to reach our solar system today. The Parker Solar Probe, the fastest-moving manmade object in history, reached a maximum speed of 176 km/s, or about 0.06% c. Comet 3i/ATLAS is currently moving at 58 km/s, or about 0.02% c.

Meaning it would have needed to fly 200x faster in transit, if the closest star system intercepted the first radio transmissions and sent a probe immediately. There are 9 star systems within 10 light years, a distance that would require an object to travel at 10.5% c (500x faster than 3i/ATLAS) to reach us by now. There are something like 95 star systems within 20 light years, a distance that would require an object to travel at 23.5% c (nearly 1200x faster than 3i/ATLAS) to reach us by now.

If there were an interstellar civilization in our cosmic “back yard” with the ability to travel over long distances at something like 25% the speed of light, they would already be here. It’s extremely unlikely that Earth’s radio transmissions would have anything to do with it.

I understand all the math and the distances involved. I don't disagree with anything you wrote.

However, I was responding to the person who asked that IF (big if) the comet were actually a spacecraft, and they were headed our way, why would they make Earth their primary target for exploration rather than Mars or an asteroid?

Because Earth is the only object in our solar system from which non-random electromagnetic energy emanates.

Believe it or don’t I don’t give a frick anymore and will pray for your children anyway if this goes sideways. (Children get her a choice)

The simple truth is dumb mfers is that nobody and I mean nobody, not even the I’m never Internet, which knows all apparently, knows what the frick this is and it’s gets stranger by the day dumb mfers. And it may be some type of weird comet but calling a fricking sheep a cow doesn’t make it one mfers And if it is a comet then many of laws of physics or understanding of rules of comets are completely wrong.

Go back to your 9-5 100k a year piss ant jobs bitches. You are kings of the world

Atlas is still strange of frick , of course we have pictures now or data to construct them but government shut down conveniently kills anything from NASA but Europeans etc will have it too. Bizarrely it will not be visible again from Earth due to sun and we are in the middle of a black swan solar storm event since Monday which we think is unrelated. (They always frick me and a lot of people up, ear ringing and I can’t fricking sleep, google it) More and more astronomers and astrophysicists are leaning towards this not being a comet but something else. It’s still at 60% likely to be a natural item versus a manufactured one on Loeb scale.

I googled your black swan solar storm and you wouldn’t like the results. It’s a combination of 2 unrelated things and the last one happened in 1859. So you must be a vampire waiting on your comet…….mothership to return

It is kinda peculiar that there is a Government shutdown this week, which would include NASA.

I guess if we get attacked by Aliens we can blame the democrats for hindering our ability to track this thing

I’d love for something like this to be aliens (more peaceful world because humans always need an enemy). But can we sticky this thread so we can embarrass the OP if it’s a comet?
