A ban won’t work, but requiring a permit to own a dangerous animal would help the cause. It needs to be regulated

I am not saying pit bulls should or sholdnt be banned
But hypothetical question for the mighty OT
If every current pit bull owner was given a german shepard instead, and every german shepard owner was given a pit bull instead, do we think the fatalities stay the same?

I really would love to know.
I am torn on whether it is mainly in the nature of the dog, or the trash that typically owns it.
Pit bulls back in the day did not have a bad rep at all, before they were synonymous with trashy people

The bite numbers would be a lot closer. Shitty owners are responsible for a lot of the issues.

What hard data or facts are you basing this on?
And even if what you say is true, then they should be banned because people don't know how to raise them (yes, the "few" ruining it for the many...though I still have no clue what pit bulls offer as pets that other larger breed dogs do not).

First, "back in the day" they weren't invited into homes as pets, they had a job working in the pit.
Second, on the nature vs nurture side it obviously can be both but the nature side of dogs is amazingly strong. I have a Basset that has never hunted nor been trained to trail in any way. She is generally ambivalent to other animals even cats or other dogs, she may watch a cat or dog but she won't run after them nor bark. However, every time she sees a rabbit she goes nuts barking and will pull on the leash trying to get to it. She knows it is a rabbit and she knows it is her "job".
Somewhere deep inside every Pit knows what its job is and it only takes a particular set of stimuli to set them off. I have been around Pits on occasion and all of them were as sweet as any dog but I always viewed them as loaded weapons.
