Vehicles have always had a face.

The faces get angrier and angrier. To the point that many Jeep owners ruin their perfectly classic jeeps to make them "angry" too.

The Miata used to have a smile. Now it has a snarl.

Modern mega-grille styling is just a natural extension of this and a further reflection our our societal mood: GFTO of my way or I'll eat you.

It certainly isn't for function. Half these grilles are "filled in" in places to reduce drag. Take a look at about any Camry--also an insult to intelligent and purposeful design.

The Miata has no snarl, it’s trying to bite the pillow.

It’s like they are designed by a focus group who is only interested in a caricature of the previous generation model.

When I was in high school Miatas were for chicks and gay guys

Fast-forward to today, it’s one of the only sports cars with a man’s transmission.

Isn’t that something, chicks and gay guys in the 90s are more manly than most dudes today.

The next generation is here. Brute strength. Terrain-tackling capability. 137 Advanced towing technologies. 136 The all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra is a force to be reckoned with. This Sunday, September 19, at 9:00 p.m. ET, come back here to get an in-depth look at the all-new design, features and specs. And tune in to Sunday Night Football to see the big reveal during halftime. The wait is almost over.

So, what color was your Miata? I'm guessing pink.

Slow your roll there friend.

It’s a pickup truck, not getting your first BJ.

I hate that light bar in the grill. Not because it isn’t cool and would help someone see but the lights on newer trucks are blinding enough for the people in front. Now it’s going to be worse.

Not just that. Plastic components everywhere even in the engines.

Composite intakes-not so new
Composite oil pans-pretty new
Plastic in the valve train-Ford pioneered this in PS diesels. It is total shite...

If anybody thinks the reliability of a strung out twin turbo V6 will be equivalent to a normally aspirated V8 they are dreaming.

If you want an engine that will last, the rule of thumb is never over 100 hp per liter. Turbos are fun, but they aren’t in modern cars for longevity, they are there of emissions limits along with start/stop that cooks the oil. If you want a turbo buy a Porsche. You get what you pay for.

So put a turbo on my 5.7 and I’ll take 560hp

I would add forced induction to a 100 hp per liter rule of thumb. A high longevity NA engine should be more in the 70 hp per liter range or a little over 1hp per cubic inch (~1.15). To get 100 per out of an NA engine you are going to have to spin it near 8k rpm and have to do some valve train magic to have decent low rpm torque.

The “good” old days of being able to choose a vehicle that you can potentially use & run for 15 years or more are over.

Vehicles are way too complicated and manufacturers have to build them to make efficiency standards where the use of lightweight materials, complex control technology, and turbo(s) are facts of life.

If you want one of those long term vehicles, you’ll have to find one from 20-plus years ago.
