Striking out on older secondary players was really bad for a stretch. Byrd and Brandon Bortner. Similarly the hunt for a DE was pretty disastrous with the Davenport trade and selection followed by Turner. Legitimately spent three first round picks on Davenport and Turner.

Trevor Penning was probably the worst move in recent memory.

In the 2003 NFL Draft, when Saints traded two first-round picks (Nos. 17 and 18 overall) plus a second-rounder to the Cardinals and select defensive tackle Johnathan Sullivan????

IMO, it is this.

Draft picks always come with a degree of uncertainty and no GM bats .1000. Plus, it's easy to judge in hindsight while the initial decision was made without the benefit of hindsight.

The big FA signings in the Brees era at least had some rationale behind them. The Saints were trying to win championships while they had a HOF QB at his peak. But for an awful call in 2018 the Saints likely get that 2nd championship.

The Carr signing though was dumb without the need for hindsight. The Saints realistic championship window had closed, Payton had left, and the Saints didn't really have the "liquidity" to sign an expensive QB who one of the worst franchises in football had given up on. The likelihood of that plan having success was low from day 1.

This. If Carr doesn't retire the "note" on him is still somewhat large, thus deferring the opportunity to try to rebuild. Instead of going into this season with some optimism and what appears to be a healthy salary cap outlook next season for the first time in years, the Saints would likely be one of the worst teams in the league and still a few years away from a good financial/cap picture.

Carr, Jarious Byrd, Browner, & Gallete contracts.

Definitely the continuity angle post-Brees. Hiring Allen prob the biggest setback but this would also include Olave & Carr

100% on the coaches. Scouting team found him, Loomis/Payton drafted him, DA put him in the wrong role. He became a FA, and the team discussed what there plans were for him and tried to pay him accordingly. He took a low contract with Philly (1 year $3.5M) betting on himself to get a bigger role. If the coaches saw the role for Baun, Loomis doesn't even blink at matching that offer
