I feel it was similar to what we did with Snead. We're comfortable keeping him at $2 mil, but if he gets more we'll likely let him walk.

Only difference is the Bears have a lot more cap so that extra mil to insure they keep him would have meant even less to them.

And the tenders have to be given out before FA so this was before the two big deals they handed out to other guys.

So I don't think this was a "set a price" move. I think it was a "we'll keep you for cheap or let you walk" move.

The ONLY reason I think they may match is because they do have the cap to do so, but in the end I think they'll deem to price too high for their 3rd or 4th WR.

Yea, I agree. It's not like his job is so secure he can do favors for anyone.

There seems to be a lot of naive people in this thread who think Pace is just gonna do us a solid. Whether we have a good relationship or not with Pace, he is still gonna do what is best for the team that employs him.

what's the strategy behind waiting until the deadline to match exactly?

unless we just pissed him off by forcing them to pay meredith more than initially planned

Ties up money for another team for a few extra days.

Much more common in basketball with RFAs but its the same concept in football.

I mean maybe at the height of FA that makes sense but not at this point

It always makes sense. You can do it. So why give the other team that courtesy where they could make other deals?

If you can take 5 days, take the 5 days, always.

My guess is keeping that cap space for New Orleans frozen. Takes another team temporarily out of the market. I know we're passed the initial bidding portion of FA, but that's just my guess.

Also, isn't it the status quo of the league to not match until the very last second?

This could also be the true. Pace could've kept Meredith there next year for less than he'd cost now should Pace match. He might be kicking himself here.

Why wouldn't a team do this?

There's really no benefit to matching early.

I think they are pissed we signed him, so they are making us wait as long as possible in order to put whatever hindrances they can on our current offseason moves. I think it's insignificant, but it's a spiteful play. It's the only thing that makes sense to me

True, but I want to say that it is often released to the media early if a team intends to match an offer or not, even if it is the full 5 days before it is official.

If we get past 12:00 central, i think the odds of us retaining Meredith goes up to 61%.

I've seen this posted before. Why exactly would they be pissed? Some dumb unspoken rule of free agency?

Either way it goes the Bears really pooped their pants on this one.

I don't think they're mad about us signing Meredith because that's the whole point of free agency. I think Pace is upset at himself that he didn't give Meredith the 2nd round tender, allowing the Bears to keep Meredith for less next year than if he were to match the Saints offer. His plan backfired on him.

Hope he slips by without an offer, but if he gets one then so be it. When you plan this, you expect your friends to recognize and honor this. He may feel betrayed by Paeyton for this move.

Of course this is all speculation, but I don't see any other reason for milking the time. They know what they are going to do, and this appears to be spiteful to me

Using that logic, if they were not going to match, there is no benefit to waiting the entire time to announce it. That logic would point to them matching the offer but tying up the Saints' cap as long as possible. If they were not going to match, it would not matter as the contract would tie up the same cap amount as waiting would.

Yeah I mean I see waiting until the last minute in early free agency but at this point all the hot names are gone and anyone the Saints wanted to bring in they pretty much could already, with or without Meredith.
