“The Bears are staring down their deadline to re-sign receiver Cam Meredith.

The team has until 3 p.m. Wednesday to inform the Saints whether they’ll match their offer sheet, signed Friday, which is worth $5.4 million guaranteed and $9.6 million total, plus incentives, over two years.”

I'm assuming they adjusted it to central time already. I believe "end of day" is usually 4pm eastern time for most deadlines.

Probably a dumb question but I’m a dumb poster so I don’t care. If the Bears match the offer, can he still chose ours instead? Maybe he wants to play in a real offense with a HOF quarterback. Could we offer a extra $100k or something?

Not how restricted free agency works.

If Bears match the only option left would be to see if they would want a late pick.

With the guarantees a trade is likely off the table.

Depends on how the guarantees are structured in the deal. If they are by way of a signing bonus, I agree with you. However, there was talk that some were in the 2nd year.

If they are going to match, they will do it at 2:59. That's just how it works.

Usually if they aren't going to match that leaks pretty early on.

I wonder if what the player wants factors into their decision at all

Pace has a good relationship with Payton and Loomis. I don't see any reason why he would make the Saints sweat this one out, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were handshake agreements to allow Meredith to come to the Saints. Possibly a reason why he passed on the Ravens deal as well. Bears would have matched it.

Pace is doing the Saints a solid, and just wait for the heads to explode on this board when the Bears select Mayfield at #8 for the upcoming trade.

I'd say it's a possibility. The agent and the team are certainly talking about the player and what he desires. The Bears have signed two receivers to high dollar contracts and one pass catching TE to another big contract. Factor in them wanting to salvage something out of their 1st round investment in Kevin White, and I don't see why they bring Meredith back even if they can afford him.

I heard something about not getting any compensation if they don't match because he was a UDFA.

Yes the way the tender they put on him works they get no compensation. It was a stupid decision on their part if they had any intention of keeping him.

A 2nd round tender and they would have only had to pay him an extra million dollars and no one was coughing up a 2nd.

I visited two Bears forums and their fans are as in the dark as we are. 50/50 people thinking they lose him or Pace matches. They are starting to freak out a little bit, so that's fun to read.

Because whether or not he is "friends" with the Saints brass, he is still expected to make strategical moves for the team he is currently the GM over.

They're gonna match baws
